Sinossi

The Shujing, or Book of Documents, is one of the oldest and most influential classics of Chinese civilization. Compiled over centuries during the Shang and Zhou dynasties, it gathers a collection of royal speeches, political proclamations, moral instructions, and early historical records that shaped the foundations of Chinese governance and statecraft.

Far more than a historical anthology, the Shujing articulates the ethical vision that guided early rulers: the Mandate of Heaven, the moral responsibilities of leadership, and the belief that political power is legitimate only when exercised with virtue. Each chapter reflects a world where ritual, authority, and cosmic order were deeply intertwined, revealing how ancient societies imagined the relationship between humans, ancestors, and the divine order.

This modern edition presents a renewed reading of a foundational text that influenced Confucian philosophy, imperial governance, and East Asian culture for over two millennia. The Shujing remains a profound lens for understanding the origins of political ethics, state ritual, and moral responsibility—ideas that continue to resonate in contemporary discussions about leadership and legitimacy.

Suryaji was barely able to speak.

He began, 'Maharaj, Tanaji realized we may not be able to climb the steep cliffs but he used his favourite ghorpad (Ghorpad is a monitor lizard in Marathi), Yashwanti.
He tied a rope around its waist and it climbed up, securing a foothold using its sharp talons. We all were able to climb up soon. As soon as we entered the fort, the guards woke up and a fight began. We were outnumbered by the enemy troops- there were Arabs, Afghans, Rajputs and Pathans and we fought like men possessed. Tanaji was a tiger, slaughtering anyone who came his way. When some of the Mawals wanted to run and Tanaji saw Shelar mama down on the ground, he cut off the ropes and shouted, 'You fools! Here your mama lies on the ground and you can think of running away?' That was enough to challenge us and we fought like devils possessed.'

Leadership under pressure: the personal account of the commander of the Royal Naval Task Group deployed to Libya in 2011.In April 2011, the newly created Royal Navy Response Force Task Group deployed to the Mediterranean to provide a range of military options in response to the Arab Spring. For the next six months the group planned and prepared for a range of potential operations including noncombatant evacuations from Libya, Yemen and Syria, maritime interdiction operations off the Libyan coast, and amphibious landings. On 3 June the group began launching attack helicopter strikes into Libya and in the nights that followed planned 47 and executed 22 strikes destroying a range of targets including: 54 vehicles, 2 rigid hull boats, 2 BM 21 rocket launchers, 4 main battle tanks, 1 zsu antiaircraft vehicle and 3 command and control nodes. The operation saw the first operational use of Apaches from the sea and the first embarkation of US Army combat search and rescue teams and Blackhawk helicopters in an RN warship. This is a personal account by the Group’s Commander, which brings to life the challenges of command – including authorizing strikes and mitigating risk to UK aircrew – in a complex and challenging environment. It reveals how closely the RN Group worked with its French counterpart, the support provided by the United States, together with the complexity of working alongside NATO and of simultaneously dealing with a range of UK authorities. This is a story of leadership under pressure and the remarkable professionalism of all involved and the bravery of Army aircrew. It was modern defense and joinery at its best – British Army and USAF helicopters operating from RN ships, supported by Fleet Air Arm aircraft and fixed wing jets as part of a largely air campaign.

“What is comfort but a filament between past and present with some sort of future implied? In other words, safety. In other words, care. I know it is possible to find these things without her—I know they are there. But it can be so hard to ask. So much is unknown.” Rebecca Spiegel is working as a teacher in New Orleans when she learns of her sister’s suicide. Only after the funeral does shock give way to grief—and to many questions. How could Emily do this to herself? How could she have abandoned all those who loved her? And what could have been done differently to prevent this devastating loss? In the days and weeks that follow, Spiegel embarks on a search for answers. She unpacks family history, documents the last traces of her sister’s life, and questions what more she could have done to prevent her death. What she finds instead is that there is no narrative on the other side of grief like this. There is no answer, no easy resolution—only those that leave and those that keep living. Unflinchingly honest, visceral, and raw, this courageous elegy lays bare the hard realities of surviving the loss of a loved one.

In late 2019, Dennis Oya's persistent cough was just the beginning of a harrowing tale of neglect and systemic failure in a Washington prison. Diagnosed eighteen months later with tuberculosis (TB), Oya's case sparked one of the largest prison TB outbreaks in decades, affecting over 3,000 contacts. This outbreak, and others like it, exposes the glaring weaknesses in prison healthcare systems.

In Outbreak Behind Bars, Homer Venters reveals the grim realities of how communicable diseases thrive in the overcrowded, unsanitary conditions of correctional facilities. From TB to Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), these infections spread rapidly due to systemic neglect and inadequate medical responses. The book highlights the stories of those who suffered, the failures in health care provision, and offers specific guidance for public health professionals in conducting investigations and facility inspections during outbreaks behind bars.

With firsthand accounts and expert analysis, this book illustrates the urgent need for reform in prison health care to protect incarcerated people and the wider community. Outbreak Behind Bars is a crucial listen for anyone concerned about justice, public health, and the overlooked plight of incarcerated people, especially students, faculty, and professionals in the field of public health.

"Men should believe in the law of love in the same way that they now believe in the inevitability of violence."

The Inevitable Revolution (1909) is one of Tolstoy's last major works of non-fiction, focusing on themes of civil disobedience, pacifism, and anarchism. The author criticises prisons, parliaments, wars, conscription, capitalism, theft, revolutionary violence, and taxes, while praising the message of love found in Christianity and acknowledging similar teachings in other religions. He believes that adherence to the law of love offers practical solutions to the societal issues he critiques and essentially calls for a moral awakening among individuals to live non-violently and to not condone violence in any form.

This essay serves as a profound reflection of Tolstoy's later philosophical views and its discussions on non-violence and ethical living continue to resonate today.
Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) was a Russian novelist, philosopher, and social reformer, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of all time. He is best known for his epic novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, both celebrated for their intricate character development and profound exploration of moral dilemmas and human nature. In his later years, Tolstoy experienced a spiritual awakening which led him to reject materialism and embrace a life of simplicity, seeking to align his life with his beliefs about non-violence and compassion. Tolstoy's legacy endures not only through his literary masterpieces but also through his profound impact on literature and philosophy.
