Sinossi

WARING WAS BORED. The pretty dancer who had, without so much as a by-your-leave, dropped into the chair opposite him, yawned flagrantly in his face.
"M'sieur should have brought his breviary," she said.
"Eh?" Waring started; his eyes twinkled, and he smiled at the dancer. "Mademoiselle will honour me by drinking another glass of wine?"
The little dancer arose from her chair; she shook her scant skirt about her trim legs.
"Zut! M'sieur is as entertaining as a saint's confession!" She shrugged her bare shoulders; a man at the next table eyed her, and she smiled provocatively; Waring watched them glide off together, unresentful at the impertinent moue she made at him over her new-found partner's shoulder. Then he forgot all about her. He sipped his wine, looking about him with vague eyes. It was the usual sort of thing in this sort of place. The same sort of thing that might be found in any of a dozen Montmartre cafes at this hour— midnight. Officers home on leave, bright-eyed Parisiennes, a sprinkling of Russians, English and Americans. It was quieter than before the Great War, and there was less extravagance.

I'm Nina Statleon, a vampire (with a little bit of witch thrown in for good measure—a sucky, magic-less one). My best friends, Marty, a werewolf, and and Wanda, a halfsie, have talked me into opening a detective agency for paranormals.

That said, my partners in this new adventure don't care about all my protests. That's how we end up with our first client, Brenda Bronkowski, an older vampire the human police are hunting down for murder . . .

Brenda fell for one of the oldest tricks in this new age of technology's book—a romance scam. You guessed it, Brenda was catfished. Brenda swears she's never even met him, let alone murdered him, and she's come to us for help finding the person responsible for his murder.

Not only is the suspect list low, there's a glitch, and it's a big one.

    The clan.

It's bad enough the human police like her for Owen's murder, but if the clan finds out we've got her holed up in the murder basement, it won't only be curtains for Brenda, our little private investigating gig could be over before it's really begun.

That means we need to solve this pronto, so we can get the clan off our backs, but more importantly, so Brenda doesn't end up expunged . . .

The Gold Sickle; or, Hena the Virgin of the Isle of Sen. A Tale of Druid Gaul is the first part of Eugène Sue's The Mysteries of the People; or, History of a Proletarian Family Across the Ages, in which he intended to produce a comprehensive "universal history," dating from the beginning of the present era down to his own days. Sue's own socialist leanings made this history that of the "successive struggles of the successively ruled with the successively ruling classes".In the first volume we meet the Gallic chief Joel, whose descendants will typify the oppressed throughout the suite of novels. Joel and his son invite a traveller to share their supper one evening, curious as they are to hear his stories. When he refuses, they capture him; the exchange of stories around the hearth turns into a debate about freedom and what freedom is worth.(Summary by Petra, partly adapted from the Translator's Preface)
