Sinossi

In the "Greatest Works of Anton Chekhov," readers are invited to explore the rich tapestry of human experience through the masterful lens of one of literature's most celebrated short story writers and playwrights. Chekhov's distinctive literary style, characterized by its psychological depth, keen observation, and subtle irony, encapsulates the nuances of life, particularly within the mundane contexts of Russian society at the turn of the 20th century. This anthology presents a curated selection of his most influential works, shedding light on his ability to capture complex emotions and existential dilemmas with an economy of language that remains unparalleled. The collection serves as a microcosm of Chekhov's thematic preoccupations—human suffering, social dislocation, and the intricate interplay of fate and choice. Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was not only a prolific writer but also a practicing physician, which profoundly influenced his compassionate portrayal of human frailty. Chekhov's experiences in the remote provinces of Russia, coupled with his deep understanding of human psychology, informed his writing and enabled him to convey universal truths about the human condition. His formative years in a society grappling with change imbued his works with a reflective depth that resonates across cultures and epochs. This anthology is highly recommended for both newcomers and seasoned readers of literature, as it showcases Chekhov's unparalleled ability to evoke empathy and challenge perceptions through deceptively simple narratives. Engage with Chekhov's world—where every character carries the weight of their circumstances, inviting reflection on the intricacies of our own lives.

Dr. Richard Alpert, a former Harvard professor and Timothy Leary cohort, was an icon of the hippie, LSD-fueled revolution of the 1960s. Thereafter, on a trip to India - like Clark Kent changing into Superman - he became the much-beloved spiritual teacher Baba Ram Das. His 1970s' iconic book Be Here Now turned on a generation to the deep, non-sectarian spirituality within us all.

Author Sripad Jagannatha Dasa became friends with Ram Das in the early '70s and traveled across America, playing Indian drums at his speaking engagements. During that time, the two discussed the publication of some of his lectures, but nothing was ever done, and the two lost touch. Now, finally, after all these years, Jagannatha Dasa keeps his promise to his old friend, publishing this original audio history of one of our most inspired and cherished spiritual teachers.

The painting of her on the battlefield with only one breast covered and holding a flag is probably one of the most famous paintings from European history. Many people have heard of Joan of Arc, but only few know what she did or how her life was.
Joan of Arc (French: Jeanne d' Arc) is a French heroine who was venerated as a saint for her role in the Lancastrian part of the Hundred Years' War. She was born in Domrémy, in the Vosges area of northeast France, to Jacques d' Arc and Isabelle Romée, a peasant family. Joan said she saw visions of the archangel Michael, Saint Margaret, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria telling her to support Charles VII and free France from English supremacy late in the Hundred Years' War. Joan was sent out as part of a relief army to the siege of Orléans by the as-yet-unanointed King Charles VII. After the siege was raised only 9 days later, she rose to fame.
She ended up being a sign of the Catholic League in the 16th century, and Napoleon Bonaparte called her a nationwide sign of France in 1803.
In 1909, she was beatified, and in 1920, she was canonized. One of France's 9 secondary tutelary saint is Joan of Arc.
Since her death, Joan of Arc has stayed a popular character in literature, painting, sculpture, and other cultural works, with many popular authors, playwrights, filmmakers, artists, and composers creating and continuing to produce cultural representations of her.

    Unguessed Kinships - Naturalism...

It took six novels and nearly thirty years for Cormac McCarthy to find commercial success with All the Pretty Horses, followed by major prizes, more bestsellers, and Hollywood adaptations of his work. Those successes, though, have obscured McCarthy's commitment to an older form of literary expression: naturalism. McCarthy's work tends to darker themes: violence, brutality, the cruel indifference of nature, themes which would not be out of place in the writing of Jack London or Stephen Crane. But literary naturalism is more than the oversimplified Darwinism that many think of. Nature may be red in tooth and claw, and humans are part of nature, but the humanity depicted in naturalist literature is capable of love, selflessness, and spirituality, as well.

In Unguessed Kinships, Steven Frye illuminates all these dimensions of McCarthy's work. In his novels and plays, McCarthy engages both explicitly and obliquely with the project of manifest destiny, in the western drama Blood Meridian, the Tennessee Valley Authority-era Tennessee novels, and the atomic frontier of Alamogordo in Cities of the Plain. McCarthy's concerns are deeply religious and philosophical, drawing on ancient Greek philosophy, Gnosticism, and Nietzsche, among other sources. Frye argues for McCarthy not merely as a naturalist writer but as a naturalist in the most expansive sense.
