Sinossi

The Eustace Diamonds by Anthony Trollope is a novel by Anthony Trollope, first published in 1871 as a serial in the Fortnightly Review. It is the third of the "Palliser" series of novels.

In this novel, the characters of Plantagenet Palliser, his wife Lady Glencora and their uncle the ailing Duke of Omnium are in the background. The plot centres on Lizzie Greystock, a fortune-hunter who ensnares the sickly, dissipated Sir Florian Eustace and is soon left a very wealthy widow and mother.

While clever and beautiful, Lizzie has several character flaws; the greatest of these is an almost pathological delight in lying, even when it cannot benefit her. (Trollope comments that Lizzie sees lies as "more beautiful than the truth.") Before he dies, the disillusioned Sir Florian discovers all this, but does not think to change the generous terms of his will.

The diamonds of the book's title are a necklace, a family heirloom that Sir Florian gave to Lizzie to wear. Though they belong to her husband's estate (and thus eventually will be the property of her son), Lizzie refuses to relinquish them. She lies about the terms under which they were given to her, leaving their ownership unclear. The indignant Eustace family lawyer, Mr Camperdown, strives to retrieve the necklace, putting the Eustaces in an awkward position.

On the one hand, the diamonds are valuable and Lizzie may not have a legal claim to them, but on the other, they do not want to antagonise the mother of the heir to the family estate (Lizzie having only a life interest).

The first installment of Bernard Cornwell’s bestselling series chronicling the epic saga of the making of England, “like Game of Thrones, but real” (The Observer, London)—the basis for The Last Kingdom, the hit BBC America television series.
This is the exciting—yet little known—story of the making of England in the 9th and 10th centuries, the years in which King Alfred the Great, his son and grandson defeated the Danish Vikings who had invaded and occupied three of England’s four kingdoms.
The story is seen through the eyes of Uhtred, a dispossessed nobleman, who is captured as a child by the Danes and then raised by them so that, by the time the Northmen begin their assault on Wessex (Alfred’s kingdom and the last territory in English hands) Uhtred almost thinks of himself as a Dane. He certainly has no love for Alfred, whom he considers a pious weakling and no match for Viking savagery, yet when Alfred unexpectedly defeats the Danes and the Danes themselves turn on Uhtred, he is finally forced to choose sides. By now he is a young man, in love, trained to fight and ready to take his place in the dreaded shield wall. Above all, though, he wishes to recover his father’s land, the enchanting fort of Bebbanburg by the wild northern sea.
This thrilling adventure—based on existing records of Bernard Cornwell’s ancestors—depicts a time when law and order were ripped violently apart by a pagan assault on Christian England, an assault that came very close to destroying England.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. An Epic Novel of Survival, Loss, and the Enduring Human Spirit
"Comanche Apocalypse: Lords of the Plains" is a sweeping historical epic that chronicles the tragic yet inspiring 160-year journey of the Comanche people from their golden age as masters of the Great Plains to their forced adaptation in the modern world. Through the eyes of unforgettable characters spanning five generations, this powerful novel transforms historical tragedy into deeply personal human drama.
The story begins in the 1750s with Standing Bull and his teenage son Sacred Spirit, Comanche warriors living in perfect harmony with the vast buffalo herds that sustained their people for countless generations. Their world is one of freedom, spiritual connection to the land, and the proud traditions of the Nʉmʉnʉʉ—"The People." But this paradise is shattered when the invisible enemy of smallpox arrives, killing Sacred Spirit's beloved four-year-old sister Bright Star and decimating their band. This devastating epidemic marks the beginning of a relentless apocalypse that will test the Comanche spirit to its very limits.
As Sacred Spirit grows into a war chief, he witnesses the systematic destruction of everything his people hold sacred. White buffalo hunters slaughter the great herds not for food but for hides alone, destroying the foundation of Comanche existence in an act of environmental warfare. Sacred Spirit's nephew Wind Walker, consumed by rage and the desire for vengeance, dies in a futile raid on a military fort, embodying the tragic cost of violent resistance.

Long before I knew that the speech of men was misused by them and that they lied in the hearing of the gods perpetually in those early days through which all men have passed, during which one believes what one is told, an old and crusty woman of great wealth, to whom I was describing what I intended to do with life (which in those days seemed to me of infinite duration), said to me, (You are building castles in Spain.' I was too much in awe of this woman not on account of the wealth, but on account of the crust to go further into the matter, but it seemed to me a very foolish thing to say, for I had never been to Spain, and I had nothing wherewith to build a castle and indeed such a project had never passed through my head. -- Hilaire Belloc
