Sinossi

ALFRED THE GREAT figures in history as the founder, in some sense, of the British monarchy. Of that long succession of sovereigns who have held the scepter of that monarchy, and whose government has exerted so vast an influence on the condition and welfare of mankind, he was not, indeed, actually the first. There were several lines of insignificant princes before him, who governed such portions of the kingdom as they individually possessed, more like semi-savage chieftains than English kings. Alfred followed these by the principle of hereditary right, and spent his life in laying broad and deep the foundations on which the enormous superstructure of the British empire has since been reared. If the tales respecting his character and deeds which have come down to us are at all worthy of belief, he was an honest, conscientious, disinterested, and farseeing statesman. If the system of hereditary succession would always furnish such sovereigns for mankind, the principle of loyalty would have held its place much longer in the world than it is now likely to do, and great nations, now republican, would have been saved a vast deal of trouble and toil expended in the election of their rulers.

"It was a delight to re-read and record The Headmaster. My Deerfield days came back to me in a great rush. ... So much of Mr. Boyden's teaching focused on what boys needed to grow up to be adults in society, with a particular emphasis on giving back to the community.” —Edoardo BalleriniStarting in 1902 at a country school that had an enrollment of fourteen, Frank Boyden built an academy that has long since taken its place on a level with Andover and Exeter. Boyden, who died in 1972, was the school's headmaster for sixty-six years. John McPhee portrays a remarkable man "at the near end of a skein of magnanimous despots who...created enduring schools through their own individual energies, maintained them under their own absolute rule, and left them forever imprinted with their own personalities." More than simply a portrait of the Headmaster of Deerfield Academy, it is a revealing look at the nature of private school education in America. An examination of the barriers facing Indigenous people within the healthcare system from the perspective of an empathetic settler physician
After leaving her medical practice in Pennsylvania in 2011, Jarol Boan returned to her childhood home in Saskatchewan, Canada to practice medicine. There she found a healthcare system struggling with preventable chronic diseases and institutional racism. Shocked by the high rate of preventable diseases in her patients, Boan realized that a paternalistic deficit model does not support Indigenous communities. Through working to provide medical services in Indigenous communities and learning firsthand from her Indigenous patients, Boan embarked on a road to enlightenment and reconciliation.
In The Medicine Chest, Boan exposes the healthcare disparities in a country that prides itself on an equitable healthcare system and examines the devastating effects of diabetes, the myth of “the drunken Indian,” the inner workings of hospitals, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, epidemics on reserves, and residential school trauma. Exploring the intersectionality of common diseases and social determinants of health gained from her experience of caring for Indigenous patients, Boan weaves historical data, comments on health policy, and jurisdictional gaps into the narrative while investigating how Canada’s healthcare system is failing those most in need.

"My Captivity Among The Sioux Indians" is a memoir written by Fanny Kelly, recounting her harrowing experience as a captive among the Sioux tribe in the mid-19th century. Kelly's narrative provides a first-hand account of her capture, the challenges she faced during her captivity, and her eventual release. Through her vivid descriptions and personal insights, she sheds light on the complex relationships and cultural dynamics between the Native American tribes and the settlers during that period.

The memoir begins with the dramatic story of Fanny Kelly's capture by a Sioux raiding party while traveling with her husband in 1864. She describes the fear and uncertainty she felt as she was separated from her husband and forced to adapt to the customs and lifestyle of her captors. Kelly's detailed observations offer readers a glimpse into the daily lives, rituals, and beliefs of the Sioux people, highlighting their resilience and resourcefulness in the face of adversity.

Throughout her narrative, Fanny Kelly confronts the challenges of survival, including scarce resources, harsh weather conditions, and the constant threat of violence. She vividly portrays the emotions and struggles she experienced, as well as the moments of compassion and kindness she encountered among her captors.
