Sinossi

In 'The Life, Trial and Conversations of Robert Emmet, Esq., Leader of the Irish Insurrection of 1803,' the anonymous author provides a compelling narrative that intertwines biography, political commentary, and a vivid portrayal of the turbulent atmosphere of early 19th-century Ireland. This work captures the profound aspirations for Irish independence led by Emmet, emphasizing his eloquent speeches and passionate ideals. The text is structured to mirror the chaotic yet fervent spirit of the insurrection, employing a style that oscillates between narrative exposition and direct quotations, enhancing the emotional resonance of Emmet's plight and vision. The author, likely an individual sympathetic to Emmet's cause or affiliated with the revolutionary movements, writes from a perspective shaped by the oppressive British rule during this period. The anonymity may suggest both a desire for impartiality as well as the political risks involved in discussing Emmet's legacy. This work not only serves as a historical document but also acts as an underground testament to Canadian nationalism and the fight for justice, reflecting wider revolutionary sentiments of the age. For readers interested in Irish history, political philosophy, and the power of individual conviction against tyranny, this book is a vital resource. It not only enlightens the reader about Emmet's role in the struggle for Irish self-determination but also illuminates broader themes of resistance and identity that continue to resonate today.

Published to commemorate its 75th anniversary, The World Is Round brings back into print the classic story created by Gertrude Stein and Clement Hurd.
Written in her unique prose style, Gertrude Stein's The World Is Round chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Rose—a whimsical tale that delights in wordplay and sound while exploring the ideas of personal identity and individuality. This stunning volume replicates the original 1939 edition to a T, including all of Clement Hurd's original blue-and-white art printed on the rose-pink paper that Stein insisted upon. Also featured here are two essays that provide an inside view to the making of the book. The first, a foreword by Clement Hurd's son, author and illustrator Thacher Hurd, includes previously unpublished photographs and sheds light on a creative family life in Vermont, where his father and mother, author Edith Thacher Hurd, often collaborated on children's books. The second essay, an afterword by Edith Thacher Hurd, takes readers behind the scenes of the making of The World Is Round, including the numerous letters exchanged between Hurd and Stein as well as images of Stein with the real-life Rose and her white poodle, Love.

THE PREDATOR written by PAT E. ROBINSON As a survivor of gut-wrenching inescapable domestic violence, Robinson has courageously stepped up to share her story in her book. She details the raw abusive, threatening actions and her distraught hopeless emotions that readers cannot help but feel alongside as she tells her story; many that may be relatable to readers. She had encountered violence in her own childhood but became emotionally resilient and fearless, until her life turned into a struggle when she met a man with a fatal attraction for her. Robinson was kidnapped, chained, beaten, sexually abused and controlled by this man’s remorseless evil nature. She was – desperate - broken - a woman who knew she would not be rescued after she found his arsenal of illegal weapons. Robinson encourages abuse victims to know that even in her darkest times, she learned what her faith in God could do for her. In fact, she credits her survival through the power of God’s love. While God encouraged Robinson to author her true story, she also received an encouraging word from best-selling novelist, Anna Quindlen. When asked about writing this book, Robinson said, “I wrote of my incredible personal experiences of the love of God with his restoration, that gave me peace, love, faith, and a hope and desire to help other victims.” Praise the Lord for giving me strength, courage, and patience to heal my hurt. And for His presence so near that showered me with His love and taught me to have faith in Him. I am so amazed with the Love of God and what He brought me through. Have faith, He will do it for you!

    D H Lawrence

David Herbert Lawrence was born on the 11th September 1885 in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, a coal mining town where the reality of a harsh life was only useful as experiences for future literary works.
He was educated at Beauvale Board School and became the first local boy to receive a scholarship to attend Nottingham High School. After 3 years he became a junior clerk in Haywood’s surgical appliances factory. He was also attempting a literary career which, in the short term, led to a teacher training position in Eastwood and later a teaching qualification from University College, Nottingham.
Lawrence’s first efforts were poems, short stories and a draft of ‘The White Peacock’. Moving to London and a teaching position in Croydon his writing attracted the attention of Ford Madox Ford, editor of The English Review, and he commissioned him to write ‘Odour of Chrysanthemums’.
Wanting to write full-time he now began work on what would become ‘Sons and Lovers.
In 1912 he met the older and married mother-of-three Frieda Weekley. They eloped to Germany and here Lawrence could see for himself the growing tensions with France. So keen was his interest that he was arrested and accused of being a British spy.
In early 1914 Frieda obtained her divorce and they returned to Britain to be married just days before the outbreak of war. Owing to her German parentage, and his own public dislike of militarism and violence, the couple were treated with contempt and suspicion throughout the war years.
Despite this he continued to write but his reputation in England was so tarnished and, mirrored by his own disdain for the country, he and Frieda left England in November 1919, first for Europe and then America via Ceylon and Australia.
They bought a ranch in Taos, New Mexico and visited Mexico several times. The third visit in March 1925 caused a near fatal attack of malaria. To convalesce they moved to Florence. Here he continued work on ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ which for many years would cause controversy. A renewed interest in oil painting resulted in an exhibition in 1929 which was raided by the police and several works were confiscated.
D H Lawrence died of complications arising from a bout of tuberculosis on the 2nd of March 1930 in Vence, France. He was 44.
