Sinossi

In the captivating epic, "The Intoxication of the Ulstermen," the anonymous author immerses readers in the mythic landscape of early Irish literature, where themes of heroism, identity, and the supernatural intermingle. Set against the backdrop of the Ulster Cycle, this narrative employs a rich, lyrical prose style that mirrors the oral traditions of its time. The tale vividly chronicles the legendary intoxication of the Ulster warriors, a supernatural event that spirals into chaos, revealing not only the fragility of human valor but also the deep-seated connections between memory, fate, and pride within the rich tapestry of Celtic mythology. The anonymity of the author adds a layer of intrigue, reflecting a long-standing tradition within Irish literature where many works remain unattributed. This obscurity invites readers to reflect on the communal nature of storytelling in medieval Ireland, where tales were often passed down through generations, shaping cultural identity. The author's deep understanding of folklore, combined with a nuanced grasp of the complexities of human behavior amidst divine intervention, showcases the timeless relevance of the narrative. Readers seeking to explore a profound exploration of cultural identity and the intersection of the mundane and the mythical will find "The Intoxication of the Ulstermen" an enlightening read. This work not only represents a cornerstone of Irish mythological literature but also compels modern audiences to ponder the timeless implications of pride and downfall. Essential for those interested in Celtic studies, this epic offers insights that resonate far beyond its historical roots.

An empathetic, funny, and sharply critical collection of essays exploring the Christian pop culture of the 2000s and its influence on today’s politically powerful evangelicalism

“Braiding relentless curiosity, sharp argument, and wry comedy, Kidd offers a lucid critique of evangelicalism that is always attentive to, and respectful of, the mysteries of faith. This is cultural criticism at its finest. I’ll read anything Kidd writes.” — Tajja Isen, author of Some of My Best Friends

In 1999, after three years of secular living in Eastern Europe, Joelle Kidd moved back to Canada and was enrolled in the strange world of an evangelical Christian school. Immediately, she found herself in a strange world of upbeat Christan pop music, purity education, and desperately trendy Bible redesigns, trying to make sense of this unfamiliar preteen cultural landscape.

In Jesusland, Joelle writes about the Christian pop culture that she was suddenly immersed in, from perky girl bands to modest styling tips, and draws connections between this evangelical subculture and the mainstream, a tense yet reciprocal relationship that both disavows the secular while employing its media markers. But none of this was just about catchy songs; every abstinence quiz in a teen magazine was laying the foundation for what would become a conservative Christian movement that threatens women’s healthcare, attacks queer and trans rights, and drives present-day political division.

Through nine incisive, honest, and emotional essays, Jesusland exposes the pop cultural machinations of evangelicalism, while giving voice to aughts-era Christian children and teens who are now adults looking back at their time measuring the length of their skirts, and asking each other if their celebrity crush was Christian enough. With care and generosity, Jesusland shows us how the conservative evangelical movement became the global power it is today by exploring the pop culture that both reflected and shaped an entire generation of young people.

    Underwater Daughter - A Memoir...

Tuni’s father began sexually abusing her when she was just four years old. Her mother, though aware of the abuse, was a silent witness—one either incapable or unwilling to intervene—and the abuse continued until Tuni was eleven. Three years later, when Tuni was fourteen, she was raped by an adult actor who was part of her cast in a professional theater production. These traumas would go on to shape much of her life.
Underwater Daughter follows how Tuni grappled with her relationship with her parents, the aftermath of her rape, an eating disorder, drug and alcohol excesses, and shame as she came of age and began to build a life. In order to not lose her inner innocence, in order to protect herself, in order to believe in love, she began early on to create imaginary worlds into which she could escape—to use dreams to transport her away from her fears. By early adulthood, she was well practiced at slapping lipstick (pink, frosty, kiss-me, gloss-over, perfect lipstick) over whatever darkness might be bubbling beneath. Hired by a dance company right out of high school, she found success as a dancer in Chicago and New York, but in her personal and emotional life, she continued to struggle. Ultimately, it took her decades of dancing, hiding, faking, fucking, costuming, implanting, dissociating, marrying, divorcing, and purging—all while staying silent about her past trauma—before a bike accident at age fifty-five forced her to stop and truly take stock of her life. As she did, she came to a resting place, finally, in regard to her father; developed the loving relationship she’d always wanted with her mother; and came to understand that, in the end, love is all anyone wants—or needs.
