Sinossi

The Popol Vuh is a foundational text of Maya culture and literature, often referred to as the "Book of the Council" or "Book of the Community." It is one of the most important historical sources for understanding the beliefs, mythology, and history of the Kʼicheʼ Maya people, who inhabited the highlands of present-day Guatemala.

The Popol Vuh does not have a single, identifiable author in the conventional sense. Instead, it is a product of the collective oral traditions of the Kʼicheʼ Maya.

Americans have long been fascinated by the Civil War, marveling at the size of the battles, the leadership of the generals, and the courage of the soldiers. Since the war's start over 150 years ago, the battles have been subjected to endless debate among historians and the generals themselves. The Civil War was the deadliest conflict in American history, and had the two sides realized it would take 4 years and inflict over a million casualties, it might not have been fought. Since it did, however, historians and history buffs alike have been studying and analyzing the biggest battles ever since.
Meanwhile, the North managed to have spectacular success jointly coordinating operations between the Army and Navy, thanks in large measure to the leadership of officers like David Farragut. While generals like Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman received the lion’s share of the credit for Union victories, especially in the Western Theater, naval forces were instrumental in the capture of New Orleans and Vicksburg, as well as at Fort Donelson and Fort Henry, and Farragut was immediately recognized for his service. Congress made him the nation’s first Rear Admiral in history in 1862, and Farragut would also go on to become the first man in the history of the U.S. Navy to attain the rank of Admiral.
Porter was recognized throughout the Civil War for his service, even as he was subjected to the kind of politicking that marked the war effort in Washington, and he became just the second man in the history of the U.S. Navy to attain the rank of Admiral. He would also have a distinguished career after the war as he helped reform the Navy.
David Farragut and David Dixon Porter: The Lives and Careers of the Adoptive Brothers Who Became the U.S. Navy’s First Admirals chronicles their backgrounds, and how they gained the experiences that proved so critical for the Civil War.

Principled Safety® for K–12: A Scenario-Driven Guide to Prevent Harm in School Shootings
We can prevent casualties in school shootings—if we change how we plan for school safety. With the right system, harm in school shooting scenarios may be prevented. This field guide adapts proven high-reliability practices to K–12 security, giving school administration a consistent, equitable way to secure schools.
Instead of focusing emergency preparedness on past shootings, John Menna—a veteran in safety engineering—presents the forward-looking Principled Safety® method, replacing guesswork and piecemeal “best practices” with a scenario-based planning system that increases student safety, not just those behind a locked classroom door.
Stop reacting after school shooting violence and instead learn to analyze credible threats, design layers of protective measures, and verify performances so protective measures work under pressure. Short, visual, and practical, the book gives school administrators, boards, facility planners, parents, policy makers, and districts a consistent level of protection across every school in the system.
If you’re responsible for school safety—or advocating for it—this book gives you a plan to invest wisely, document decisions, and protect every student, teacher, and staff member. Before the Next Tragedy is a disciplined, system-level approach with an emphasis on an equita

Written during a genocide, After Savagery reveals the ethical bankruptcy of "Western philosophy" and how it undergirds the erasure of the colonized.
The death toll in Gaza continues to rise―a cold, lifeless number representing entire communities crushed under the weight of settler colonialism. What remains of the theories we use to understand our world? With lyrical and lucid fury, Hamid Dabashi exposes the racist roots of Western philosophy, demanding that listeners overcome its pernicious phantom of relevance. Rather than perceiving "the West" as giving carte blanche to Israel, Dabashi insists that Israel must be understood as its quintessence. If Israel is the West and the West is Israel, then Palestine is the world and the world is Palestine. Holding to glimmers from revolutionary works of literature and film, Dabashi argues, in grief and love, that the wretched of the earth need poetry after barbarism—and that Palestine is the site of a liberated imagination.

Some years ago, the editor of an English magazine sent a communication to "the hundred greatest men in Great Britain" asking them this question: "If for any reason you were to spend a year absolutely alone, in a prison for instance, and could select from your library three volumes to be taken with you as companions in your period of retirement please to inform us what those three books would be." The inquiry was sent to peers of the realm, prominent leaders in politics, judges, authors, manufacturers, merchants, gentlemen of leisure—men who would represent every aspect of successful life. In the answers it was found that ninety-eight of the hundred men named "The Bible" first on the list of the three books to be chosen. (From Book introduction)
