Sinossi

Cocke Lorelles Bote, attributed to an anonymous author, is a remarkable poem that echoes the medieval tradition of courtly love while simultaneously challenging its conventions. Written in a distinctive alliterative verse, the text features rich imagery and symbolic representations that navigate the tensions between desire and disillusionment. The narrative unfolds a tale filled with complex emotions, showcasing the protagonist's yearning for an unattainable lady, encapsulating the essence of chivalric ideals while critiquing the era's romantic dogma. This exploration of love, identity, and societal constraints situates the poem within the broader context of Middle English literature, paralleling works by contemporaries such as Chaucer and the Gawain poet. The anonymity of the author evokes intrigue and speculation, shedding light on the collaborative and oral traditions prevalent during the late medieval period. The choice to remain unnamed may reflect the intricate interplay between personal experience and collective cultural expression, suggesting a satirical lens through which the author critiques societal norms. This context invites readers to consider the poem as a resonant commentary on the complexities of romantic relationships in a patriarchal society. For readers fascinated by the nuances of medieval literature and the formulaic constructs of love poetry, Cocke Lorelles Bote offers a profound exploration of idealism juxtaposed with reality. Its lyrical richness and thoughtful subtext make it an essential read for those seeking to understand the evolution of romantic narrative, ultimately providing a unique insight into the human experience of love that transcends time.

    Ditching the Checklist was written to help Evangelicals and other Christians who, due to grounding the assurance of their salvation in evidences of their new birth instead of Christ alone, struggle over whether or not they are saved. Evangelical leader J. D. Greear describes anxiety over whether or not one is saved as a major problem among Evangelicals. With ample testimony from Scripture and appealing to the thinking of Luther, this booklet addresses this anxiety head on. Mark Mattes argues that faith alone in Christ, and neither a decision for Christ nor altered manners, is both necessary and sufficient for salvation.  Many Evangelicals struggle with the assurance of their salvation precisely because teachers like John MacArthur and John Piper add superfluous things on to Christ like moral improvement or pious feelings to secure sinners of their salvation. This booklet challenges such add-ons. Mattes encourages Evangelicals to place their trust in Christ alone, not themselves, and to help Lutherans understand that their cherished beliefs about salvation are grounded in Scripture. This booklet also shows Evangelicals, and Lutherans, unaware of it, that the Lutheran doctrine of baptismal regeneration as well as infant baptism are not holdovers from Roman Catholicism but are scriptural.

    Curious is the Father’s love. It changes nothing and everything.
    As His love lands on the barren landscape of an orphan heart, it toils the soil of sonship, and like the faithful farmer, produces the fruit of the age-old invitation - will you accept my love?
    Our change comes in our followership of Jesus, but it is the Father’s love that orients us toward the walk. We can deny it, or we can accept it. It will change nothing, or it will change everything.
    We carry with us where it is that we come from. And should we risk pushing past the boundaries of bitterness and betrayal, we step into the Beloved Son’s understanding and experience of the Father’s love. The place we have been longing for all our lives; our divine place of belonging.

    Explore the Book of Baruch, a text of significant historical and religious depth, recognized as a deuterocanonical book in some Christian traditions. While it holds a place of reverence in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Bibles, it is not considered canonical in Judaism and Protestant Christianity, where it is categorized as part of the Biblical apocrypha.

    Named after Baruch ben Neriah, the well-known scribe and close associate of the prophet Jeremiah, as mentioned in Baruch 1:1, this book is traditionally attributed to him. It's widely believed that he authored the entirety of this profound work, although his direct authorship remains a subject of scholarly discussion.

    The Book of Baruch offers a reflective glance into the life and thoughts of Jewish exiles in Babylon. It presents a rich tapestry of themes, including theological reflections on Israel's history, insightful discussions on wisdom, and a heartfelt address to both the residents of Jerusalem and the wider Jewish Diaspora.

    Examine the scholarly debate surrounding the book's origin, with some scholars proposing that it was written during or shortly after the period of the Maccabees. This hypothesis adds another layer of historical significance to the text, situating it in a pivotal period of Jewish resistance and identity formation.

    As a text revered in certain Christian traditions and acknowledged for its historical and theological significance in Jewish studies, the Book of Baruch invites readers on a journey through the complexities of faith, wisdom, and exile. Its narratives and teachings continue to offer insights into the enduring nature of spiritual reflection and communal identity.

    Novena to the Holy Spirit -...

    St. Alphonsus Liguori

    From Slaying Dragons Press Classics, this reprint of Novena to the Holy Spirit includes an introduction about the Church’s high esteem for this great Doctor of the Church.
    ~~~
    Our hearts have become the altars of God upon which He desires that the “fire of His divine love,” should always be burning. It is for this reason that the Eternal Father was not satisfied with sending only His eternal Son to us, but longed to send to us the Holy Spirit as well, that He might dwell in our souls “and keep them constantly on fire with love.”
    St. Alphonsus said, “Love is also called dew, because it cools the heart of bad passions and of temptations. Therefore the Holy Ghost is also called refreshment and cooling in the heat. This dew descends into our hearts in the time of prayer.” By this reliance upon the action of the Holy Spirit, St. Alphonsus teaches that every disordered passion of ours will be appeased, and we will come to know that peace of God which surpasses all understanding.
    These insights of St. Alphonsus Liguori are among the many which fill this book. They are sure to awaken in the reader, and in particular the one who prays through this Novena, a deep desire to do God’s will that this divine fire may be always burning in his soul.
    St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696 – 1787), was a zealous missionary, exemplary bishop, miracle worker, and prolific writer whose praises were sung by the whole Church during his life and after his death. Following his departure from this world, the Pope was inundated with requests to list St. Alphonsus Liguori among the great Doctors of the Church, an honor which his writings, capturing the hearts of all who take hold of them, testify he is worthy. The two works presented here are just a small part of the great writings he has left to the Church.
