Jack Winter is an abusive man who exploits and beats women. One night, after a quarrel with a man whose gamekeeper he was, Jack is found dead, shot from his own gun. Soon after that, Jack's widow runs away, catching a train, and disappears, becoming the main suspect. While the police unsuccessfully investigate the murder and search for a suspect, a mysterious woman appears at the Davenant Priory. Weak sighted Sir Oswald doesn't notice anything suspicious, but there is something strange about Miss Martin and she can't hide the secret forever.

There are books that haunt. The King in Yellow is one of them.
First published in 1895, this cycle of four interlinked stories—The Repairer of Reputations, The Mask, In the Court of the Dragon, and The Yellow Sign—offers a view into a world just a shade off from our own. Beneath the surface of elegant prose and civil order lies something broken, something touched by madness, art, power—and something unspeakably strange.
A book within the book, a play that should never be read, threads through each tale, leaving behind not answers, but echoes. With quiet menace and disquieting beauty, Chambers sketches a fictional universe that lingers like a fevered dream.
Not quite horror, not quite science fiction, not quite fantasy—The King in Yellow is a singular work. A whisper from the shadows. An invitation to look too long at the thing you cannot name.

A queer paranormal horror novel in the style of showrunner Mike Flannagan, showing the complex real-life terror inherent in grief and mental illness

After the tragic death of their father and surviving a life-threatening eating disorder, 18-year-old Ellis moves with their mother to the small town of Black Stone, seeking a simpler life and some space to recover. But Black Stone feels off; it’s a disquieting place surrounded by towns with some of the highest death rates in the country. It doesn’t help that everyone says Ellis’s new house is haunted — everyone including Quinn, a local girl who has quickly captured Ellis's attention. And Ellis has started to believe what people are saying: they see pulsing veins in their bedroom walls and specters in dark corners of the cellar. Together, Ellis and Quinn dig deep into Black Stone’s past and soon discover that their town, and Ellis’s house in particular, is the battleground in a decades-long spectral war, one that will claim their family — and the town — if it’s allowed to continue.

Withered is queer psychological horror, a compelling tale of heartache, loss, and revenge that tackles important issues of mental health in the way that only horror can: by delving deep into them, cracking them open, and exposing their gruesome entrails.
