It is said that kelpies are creatures born of shadows and moonlight. Mysterious spirits that haunt the rippling surface of lochs and rivers and lure fair maidens into a watery grave. It is also said that a kelpie's beauty is as irresistible as it is deadly and many unwary travellers have been charmed and carried into the depths, only the faintest echoes of their cries lingering above the marshes. Yet many tales speak of a different side to the creature—one that is ancient, a symbol of the untamed forces of nature, wild and unpredictable like the very soul of the water.
From a different world comes a siren. With a gentle voice as soft as a breeze and as sharp as a blade, the siren sings. Her song is both a lullaby and a lure. Each note bends the air, making the world tilt and sway, pulling with it the very tides of destiny. Those who hear her call are drawn in, entranced by the impossible beauty of her song, until they are nothing more than vessels of desire and longing, lost to the waves. And though some say she sings only to bring death, others believe she is a keeper of secrets, a dreamer, guarding the mysteries of the world beneath the waves with a voice that has the power to light up even the darkest night.
    Kerr is a kelpie.
    Cassandrea is a siren.
Two spies in the service of the same dragon king.
Two souls lost in a city on the brink of battle.
And the war has just begun.

Maggie Cartwright never expected to find herself as a mercenary, never mind one facing an apocalyptic threat the world hasn’t seen in living memory. A solitary auto mechanic and a smith by trade, she’s more comfortable making blades than using them. Slaying monsters professionally is a difficult, hazardous job that’s as likely to end with fangs in your throat as a solid paycheck, even for professionals working in a team. But in the land of the fae, fate doesn’t care what she’s comfortable with, and for Maggie, the danger of razor claws and ancient magic pales next to the danger posed by her own people’s politics. Monsters can kill. Manipulation by the fae can do far more damage.Maggie’s talents as a master smith make her valuable, and her former master’s legacy makes her a target. With a city on the line and hellish monstrosities digging their way up from the deep, Maggie can’t refuse the call to fight, and the battle cannot be won without allies. With the right friends, she could save hundreds of thousands of lives and get paid doing it. But if she can’t learn who to trust, she won’t be the only one who ends up dead....The following work contains depictions of verbal abuse, violence and mortal peril, death, mild gore, and peril to teenagers in a school setting. Reader discretion is advised.

    The countdown to invasion begins...

It's September 1940, and British intelligence is desperately worried: the Nazi invasion of Britain is imminent.

A sinister organisation called The Group, a collection of British and Irish Nazi collaborators, is at work trying to support Hitler's plans...

But that is not the only concern for the spy chiefs: the search for double agent 'Archie' – the Soviet spy and British traitor – is proving fruitless, and now they know there’s a second traitor, Bertie, also in play.

Will they be able to foil the invasion plans without their schemes being leaked to the enemy?

Taking the reader from wartime London to the south coast of England, from Berlin to neutral Ireland and from the German intelligence headquarters in Hamburg to the port of Rotterdam, The Second Traitor is the second novel in Alex Gerlis’s highly acclaimed Double Agent series, a follow-up to Every Spy a Traitor.
