1864 ... Fear About Capital

by Anna Maria Stratta and Franca Bosco

A series of murders always carries with it a series of investigations ...

1864 ... fear of the capital

In an apartment in Piazza Vittorio, a young aristocrat had just taken the life of his mistress. As the nobleman walked away, conflicting emotions within him tormented him but at the same time exalted him. How nice to be masters of the life of another human being. Deciding to end the existence of another person made him feel almost omnipotent. These were the thoughts that crowded his head as an evil grin pursed his lips.

'Our wars may come in many forms. On the battlefields. Within ourselves.'
Mahatma Gandhi: lawyer, champion of non-violence, beloved leader. Nathuram Godse: journalist, nationalist – and the man who murdered him.
Anupama Chandrasekhar's play The Father and the Assassin traces Godse's life over thirty years during India's fight for independence: from a devout follower of Gandhi, through to his radicalisation and their tragic final encounter in Delhi in 1948.
An essential exploration of oppression and extremism, this gripping play opened to critical acclaim at the National Theatre, London, in May 2022, directed by Indhu Rubasingham – and was revived there the following year. It was a finalist for the 2022-23 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.

Expose yourself to one of the most original new voices in theatre with this collection of two uncompromising plays by Greg MacArthur.

Snowman: After years of wandering, Denver and Marjorie find themselves in a remote northern community at the edge of a glacier, chopping wood, renting out stolen videos and doing cocaine with Jude, a young gay man whose parents have abandoned him. When Jude discovers the body of a prehistoric boyfrozen in the glacier, everyone finds their lives beginning to shift and thaw in unexpected ways.

girls! girls! girls!: Splitz deserved to win. Missy stole first place. Set in the cutthroat world of high school gymnastics, this play follows the Friday-night exploits of four teenage chums as they seek revenge for a loss on the vaulting horse. Told in a hypnotic, rap-meets-nursery-rhymes style, this play, which takes its cue from A Clockwork Orange and the Columbine massacre, is brutally violent as it explores what happens when emptiness becomes the norm.

Exposure includes an introduction by Peter Hinton.

‘For truly provocative theatre from a new voice, go see Snowman … it’s loopy, quirky and beautifully done.’

    —CBC

‘[girls! girls! girls! is] wondrous, scary and heartbreaking.’

‘I used to want a black enamel farmhouse sink. Now, I just want shelter.’

From acclaimed playwright Karen Hines come two darkly comic meditations on security, safety, and shelter.

Crawlspace is a comic, Kafkaesque monologue about the darker side of home ownership that moves past ‘cautionary’ as it snakes through the brutal battleground of Toronto real estate, decorative twig orbs, and the state of the human soul.

All the Little Animals I Have Eaten explores questions surrounding existence, death, and salvation through the perspectives of one sleep-deprived young woman, the ghosts of brilliant authors, some well-heeled professionals, meth-curious lambs, a puppet in a beatnik onesie, tiny vertebrates, glowing arthropods, and other unexpected voices.

Praise for the Videofag production of Crawlspace:

‘Karen Hines’s macabre monologue about a real-estate nightmare – and a dead animal stuck in a crawlspace – was all the more terrifying for being true. This was Hines at her most horrifyingly hilarious.’

    – Globe and Mail

‘Hines’s clever script, alternately savagely funny and disturbing, is full of facts the author keeps amending, underlining the bait-and-switch nature of the real estate swindle.’

    – NOW magazine

‘The kind of story you want to talk about as soon as you get home. Horrifying and enlightening.’
