Sinossi

In "A Voice from the South," Anna J. Cooper presents a groundbreaking collection of essays that illuminate the complexities of race, gender, and social justice in post-Reconstruction America. Written in a style that blends rhetorical fervor with profound intellectual rigor, Cooper's work is both a personal testament and a powerful call to action. Her articulate arguments and poignant reflections challenge the prevailing narratives of her time, making her voice resonate across generations and establishing her as a precursor to later African American feminist thought. This text not only critiques the societal structures that marginalize black women but also advocates for their rights, emphasizing the necessity of education and civic engagement. Anna J. Cooper, an influential educator and activist, was born into slavery and emerged as one of the first African American women to earn a college degree. Her life experiences, imbued with the struggles and aspirations of black women, significantly shaped her perspectives, compelling her to speak out against the injustices faced by her community. Her conviction in the importance of education and advocacy laid the groundwork for her seminal work, reflecting the resilience and strength of black womanhood. I highly recommend "A Voice from the South" to readers interested in understanding the intersecting struggles of race and gender, as well as those who seek a deeper appreciation of the roots of feminist thought. Cooper's eloquence and insight provide not only a historical perspective but also provoke thought on contemporary issues, making this work an essential reading for anyone invested in social justice.

When it comes to making great decisions, the way you think about things is usually a lot more influential than what you actually think.
If you ever hired a person who 'looks the part', dated someone who 'gives you a good feeling', voted for the party that 'speaks the most sense' or got into an investment that 'cannot be missed', only to realise you made a horrible mistake, you might have wondered how you ever talked yourself into it.
Yet, still bearing the bruises, you're likely to make exactly the same decision the next time.
The beliefs that guide your ideas and the instincts that drive your actions, are all informed by your unconscious biases, and literally every single one of us has them, which irrationally tell us one thing is good and another is bad, one thing is absolutely true and another is utterly false, and make you act less smartly than you should.
But the good news is that you can learn to see them, to manage them and ultimately overcome them.
In Don't Believe Everything You Think, Colin J Browne shows you how biases work, why they matter, and how to reframe your thinking to make well-founded decisions about life and work, relationships and investing, and much else in between, to vastly improve your chances of success.

In this extraordinarily compelling trans memoir, Avi, a bearish trans man and Psychology Professor, navigates sex and dating in a phallic-centric universe of men who love men. But something is missing. To become the man he aspires to be, he needs to reconnect with Talia, his hyper-feminine straight female past, and invite her back in. Growing up in a working-class right-wing Israeli family and barely finishing high school, he became involved in pro-Palestinian activism and escaped compulsory military service by faking madness. Despite poor schooling Avi went on to attain a PhD from Yale and change his life entirely. This memoir is the story of that journey and explores what it means to come home to oneself with brutal honesty, humour, and self-compassion. Told in three episodes, early transition, later transition and Talia's story, this memoir tackles contemporary gender and social issues. At its heart is a universal theme: to become who we already are, we must integrate the past into the present

The Radical Mind - The Origins...

    Chelsea Ebin

The Radical Mind is a groundbreaking analysis of the origins of the Christian Right, whose political victories are radically reshaping the landscape of American society. Scholars and the public alike have traditionally regarded the New Right and the Christian Right as separate movements. Insofar as both are conservative efforts, most people view them as reactionary and driven by a culture-war backlash against liberal changes to society.

Chelsea Ebin's The Radical Mind aims to overturn this consensus. Through a close analysis of New Right architects Connaught Marshner and Paul Weyrich (who is often seen as secular but was a committed Catholic), this book explores the way conservative Catholics and Protestants overcame their long-standing antipathy to form a political coalition—what Ebin calls the New Christian Right. Drawing on extensive archival research, Ebin shows how the movement’s key architects infused right-wing activism with religion.

The radical aims of the New Christian Right have been obscured by the way they cultivated a shared identity of victimhood and manipulated the discourse about backlash to create a nostalgic idea of the past that they then leveraged to justify their right-wing policy goals. The Catholic-Protestant alliance constructed an imagined past that they projected into the future as their ideal vision of society. Ebin calls this strategy "prefigurative traditionalism"—a paradoxical prefiguring of a manufactured past. Using this tactic, the New Christian Right coalition disguised the radicality of its politics by framing their aims as reactionary and defensive rather than proactive and offensive.

The Eurasian Century - Hot Wars...

We often think of the modern era as the age of American power. In reality, we're living in a long, violent Eurasian century. That giant, resource-rich landmass possesses the bulk of the global population, industrial might, and potential military power. Eurasia is a strategic prize without equal—which is why the world has been roiled, reshaped, and nearly destroyed by clashes over the supercontinent.

Since the early twentieth century, autocratic powers have aspired for dominance by seizing commanding positions in the world's strategic heartland. Offshore sea powers, namely the United Kingdom and America, have sought to make the world safe for democracy by keeping Eurasia in balance. America's rivalries with China, Russia, and Iran are the next round in this geopolitical game. If this new authoritarian axis succeeds in enacting a radically revised international order, America and other democracies will be vulnerable and insecure.

Hal Brands argues that a better understanding of Eurasia's strategic geography can illuminate the contours of rivalry and conflict in today's world. The Eurasian Century explains how revolutions in technology and warfare, and the rise of toxic ideologies of conquest, made Eurasia the center of twentieth-century geopolitics—with pressing implications for the struggles that will define the twenty-first.
