Sinossi

ARABIAN NIGHTS: Andrew Lang's 1001 Nights & R. L. Stevenson's New Arabian Nights presents a fascinating confluence of narrative traditions, bridging the timeless allure of Middle Eastern folklore with the innovative storytelling of the 19th-century Western literary canon. The anthology unites the classic tales of bravery, intrigue, and wonder that have enchanted generations with Stevenson's imaginative twist on the genre, offering a nuanced play between mystique and modernity. The diversity of style ranges from the whimsy and wisdom found in Lang's translations to the daring and gothic flavors embedded in Stevenson's contributions, creating a rich tapestry of storytelling that both honors and expands on the traditional Arabian Nights format. The contributing authors, Andrew Lang, renowned for his role in making folktales accessible to the Western audience, and Robert Louis Stevenson, celebrated for his masterful flair in intertwining fantasy with keen social commentary, deliver a powerful literary exploration. This anthology aligns with the cultural cross-pollination and historical romance movements which emphasize shared human experiences across different cultural spectra. As these varied voices coalesce, they cultivate a narrative landscape that both celebrates and challenges perceptions, inviting readers to re-examine known tales through an enlightening dual perspective. For readers eager to traverse a narrative journey that celebrates historical interplay and creative reinvention, this volume offers an essential compendium. It opens a versatile dialogue among diverse storytelling forms, allowing for an educational voyage that transcends traditional boundaries. Martyn Bennett was an artist ahead of his time. Piper, violinist, composer, producer, DJ – his radical blend of tradition and technology created an audacious new sound that was uniquely his own.
Steeped in the folk cultures of Scotland, yet inspired too by deep-rooted traditions from far beyond, his music ignored boundaries and celebrated cultural difference wherever he found it. Although classically trained, he was drawn to the gritty excitement of the urban dance club scene, and his fusion of folk, classical, jazz and hard-edged electronica was championed by the likes of Peter Gabriel and the folklorist Hamish Henderson who labelled it 'brave new music'.
This biography traces his story through personal struggles and artistic triumphs, and offers an assessment of his place in the pantheon of major Scottish artists. It is a story of resilience as well as innovation: twice diagnosed with unrelated cancers, his professional career lasted little more than a decade, and he fought serious illness for half of it. He died in January 2005, aged 33. Yet his art continues to inspire: where he led, others have followed, and his music still wins awards and fills concert halls at major international festivals two decades after his death.

Given the RAF’s importance, it should come as no surprise that some of the pilots ranked among Britain’s most recognized war heroes, and Douglas Bader remains one of the most famous British soldiers in World War II. He has become synonymous with courage and perseverance in adversity, especially since both his legs were amputated after an air crash in 1931, yet he managed to continue flying and return to the RAF at the outbreak of the war in 1939. He became a well-decorated and highly promoted fighter ace before being shot down and taken prisoner by the Germans, and as a prisoner of war for three and a half years, he made persistent attempts to escape, despite the considerable difficulties posed by having two artificial legs, until he was sent to Colditz. After the war, he received a knighthood and many other awards for his charitable work in support of disabled war veterans.

England in the time of his boyhood was a cold and colourless country. They had seen to that, the Autumn Men.They who had been lifted high, the old men of his country and other countries, who in the autumn of their years, reflecting on the unfulfilled promise of their youth, and their failures as yet unredeemed, feeling as any old man adrift alone on a small boat, sails broken, oars lost, swept hopelessly onward towards the deafening roar of the approaching weir, might feel, decided that too few had sweetly and honourably been called. So call out the young men, wide-eyed and brave of heart, to don uniform, bid sweethearts farewell and forfeit their future. And murder in the name of God.Until they too are harvested 'neath the Autumn Men's sickle. And the lark song is stilled as passing bells are heard anew.------------No longer could the innocent look to the heavens for salvation, only look on in horror as the devil poured the contents of hell over them. And so it was and so it remained until Satan, who had found refuge in the hearts of too many, was cast out and the women had cried.."enough!!"----------And on countless memorials in towns and villages across the cold and colourless country, new names were added to the old and memorials once again were baptised with tears of the innocent for the innocent. And in the great city as the weak winter sunshine filters through the mists of an early November morning, the Autumn Men in their black coats and polished shoes still stand, shameless, in solemn line to bow their heads and lay poppy-lit wreaths, mankind's apology to its youth.----------This then was the wasteland of his boyhood. One from which he would spend the rest of his life trying to escape.
