    Essays: First Series Compensation

A world in perfect balance—so claims Emerson in Compensation, an essay that pulses with quiet defiance and deep assurance. No gain without loss, no misstep without lesson, no fortune without its hidden tax. It is neither fate nor blind justice but a living rhythm, an invisible hand that rights every scale, even when human eyes fail to see.
Emerson does not preach; he unfolds. The idea seeps in, settles, challenges. His words are not doctrine but a lens—through which prosperity and misfortune reveal themselves as two faces of the same coin. To take without giving, to rise without cost—impossible. The universe does not permit such imbalances to last.
In his signature style, Emerson moves between the poetic and the philosophical, the tangible and the transcendent. He speaks not to convince but to awaken. He does not offer comfort; he offers clarity. The reader who steps into Compensation may leave unsettled, yet somehow lighter, as if a long-unnoticed weight has been named, measured, and, at last, understood.

In 27 BC, when Augustus turned into the first sovereign of the Roman Empire, introducing the supreme period, the country he governed was more than 700 years of age. Rome's rulers had controlled an immense region that stretched out into northern Europe, parts of Africa, and Asia for quite a long time. The city of Rome was the most delightful and refined on the planet. It was filled with parks and gardens, marble curves and sculptures, lavish royal residences, immense amphitheaters, and rambling colleges. All were connected by an unpredictable organization of streets furthermore water-bearing reservoir conduits. Rome was a focal point of world culture as the capital of the most impressive country on Earth. By AD 98, majestic Rome arrived at its most extreme size, becoming the most significant realm ever. The vast domain contained around 60 million individuals, or around one-fourth of Earth's populace. Romans, who spoke Latin, alluded to their properties as the imperium sine fine, or "domain without end." The realm extended through the advanced countries of Spain, France, England, Netherlands, and Germany. It incorporated quite a bit of eastern Europe, including Slovenia, Romania, Armenia, and what's more, Croatia. The domain without end spread across North Africa from Morocco to Egypt and east into Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. Every one of the regions was joined under the Roman principle, wherever the official language was Latin. All over the place, installments were made in sestertii (Roman brass coins). All over, there was just a single law: Roman law. Most Roman subjects lived in separated ancestral networks where life had changed minimally in millennia. Provincial Romans chased, fished, developed small harvests, and tended domesticated animals. During the royal period, London and Paris were minimal more than a few military stations with less than 8,000 individuals. A considerable lot of the inhabitants were Roman officers called legionnaires. In any case, the realm a

This “wonderfully written” autobiographical account of a Vietnam vet’s war experiences “takes the reader to a strange time and place.” (Eric M. Bergerud, author of Red Thunder, Tropic Lightning)   In the summer of 1969, while America was landing on the moon or rocking out at Woodstock, Jim Ross left his home in Oklahoma to enter the U.S. Army. He arrived in Vietnam in February 1970 to serve his tour, first with the armored personnel carriers of the 2nd Battalion of the 22nd Infantry Regiment (the 2/22 or the “Triple Deuce”) of the 25th Infantry. Written from the perspective a kid barely out of high school whose mission was to kill communists and whose goal was to survive, Outside the Wire is a thoughtful, action-packed memoir of one American soldier’s combat tour in Vietnam. Ross served as a rifleman, machine gunner, tunnel rat, and demolitions man with the 25th infantry and 1st Cavalry divisions. Beginning with a tense ambush patrol,  Ross doesn't let up through a year of hair-raising night watches, soggy humps through the jungle, and deadly encounters with the North Vietnamese, including such notable campaigns as the Cambodian incursion.

Behind a gruesome ISIS beheading video lies the untold story of the men in orange and the faith community that formed these unlikely modern-day saints and heroes. In a carefully choreographed propaganda video released in February 2015, ISIS militants behead twenty-one orange-clad Christian men on a Libyan beach. In the West, daily reports of new atrocities may have displaced the memory of this particularly vile event. But not in the world from which the murdered came. All but one were young Coptic Christian migrant workers from Egypt. Acclaimed literary writer Martin Mosebach traveled to the Egyptian village of El-Aour to meet their families and better understand the faith and culture that shaped such conviction. He finds himself welcomed into simple concrete homes through which swallows dart. Portraits of Jesus and Mary hang on the walls along with roughhewn shrines to now-famous loved ones. Mosebach is amazed time and again as, surrounded by children and goats, the bereaved replay the cruel propaganda video on an iPad. There is never any talk of revenge, but only the pride of having a martyr in the family, a saint in heaven. “The 21” appear on icons crowned like kings, celebrated even as their community grieves. A skeptical Westerner, Mosebach finds himself a stranger in this world in which everything is the reflection or fulfillment of biblical events, and facing persecution with courage is part of daily life.In twenty-one symbolic chapters, each preceded by a picture, Mosebach offers a travelogue of his encounter with a foreign culture and a church that has preserved the faith and liturgy of early Christianity – the “Church of the Martyrs.” As a religious minority in Muslim Egypt, the Copts find themselves caught in a clash of civilizations. This book, then, is also an account of the spiritual life of an Arab country stretched between extremism and pluralism, between a rich biblical past and the shopping centers of New Cairo.
