Where did the first colonizers of North America from Europe, North Africa and the British Isles first land?
The greatest mixed cluster is in New England and spreading out from it. And how did these ancient travellers journey across the face of North America? Generally in the same way that they got there. In watercraft! To the ancients the seas, lakes and rivers were the superhighways as crossing land until the later Romans developed road systems was in many cases near impossible if not exceptionally difficult. This is how all great exploration has always been done until recently. You sail across a sea and then up the first river you find to see where it will go and this scenario never changes. You only go overland when there are no rivers or lakes as it is much harder to consign goods or travel over unexplored territory than by water.
Another great superhighway to trade was from the Gulf of Mexico and up its tributaries and in some cases via now long lost rivers to the Great Lakes themselves. In fact you did not even need long lost rivers. Present day ones would do just as well. The Des Moines River which connects up with the Mississippi River runs within five miles west of Lake Michigan within the present city limits of Chicago. Not too far to move a boat across land from the Great Lakes to the Des Moines River. Even less distance in the thousand year pluvial periods when water levels were higher and there was more rain. There were wider rivers and more lakes to travel across.

Diary of a Man in Despair

Hailed as one of the most important works on the Hitler period, this is an "astonishing, compelling, and unnerving" portrait of life in Nazi Germany between 1936 and 1944—from a man who nearly shot Hitler himself (The New Yorker).

Friedrich Reck might seem an unlikely rebel against Nazism. Not just a conservative but a rock-ribbed reactionary, he played the part of a landed gentleman, deplored democracy, and rejected the modern world outright. To Reck, the Nazis were ruthless revolutionaries in Gothic drag, and helpless as he was to counter the spell they had cast on the German people, he felt compelled to record the corruptions of their rule.

The result is less a diary than a sequence of stark and astonishing snapshots of life in Germany between 1936 and 1944. We see the Nazis at the peak of power, and the murderous panic with which they respond to approaching defeat; their travesty of traditional folkways in the name of the Volk; and the author's own missed opportunity to shoot Hitler. This riveting book is not only, as Hannah Arendt proclaimed it, "one of the most important documents of the Hitler period," but a moving testament of a decent man struggling to do the right thing in a depraved world.

While people often tend to think of submarines as a modern invention, inventors created several prototypes from 1580 onward, and they even attempted to use them. Some of the designs remained theoretical and never got off the drawing board, but as time went on, several Europeans built and tested primitive submarines. Most of these early subs were made of wood and often possessed an awkward shape, but a French priest first proposed the now familiar cylindrical layout in 1634. He determined that this shape would make it easier for the submarine to withstand water pressure, while likewise improving maneuverability.
The American Civil War witnessed new designs and prototypes of submarines appearing on American naval drawing boards. These subs had the “cigar shape” familiar throughout history from that point forward. Most of them failed for one reason or another, but one, the CSS Hunley, actually succeeded in using a “spar torpedo” to sink the USS Housatonic. It was the first time a submarine successfully sank a ship, but as historic and groundbreaking as the Hunley and its mission was, all of that was overshadowed by the lingering debate over just what happened to the Confederate submarine, which never made it back to port after the attack.
Although the Hunley remains the most famous submarine of the Civil War, the Union Navy attempted to create and use a submarine years before the Hunley embarked on its historic operation, and though it’s widely forgotten today, the first Union submarine, the Alligator, also had a fascinating history.

China has always fascinated outsiders, much in the same way that distant light fascinates someone looking down a dark road. It is both familiar and mysterious, ancient and new, and fully understanding it seems to always remain just out of reach. From the Great Wall to the ancient teachings of Confucius, China’s natural and man-made wonders have been topics of interest among Westerners since the Middle Ages and the pursuit of trade routes both by land and sea, amazing Marco Polo and 19th century British expeditions in similar ways despite the passage of several centuries between them.
The Great Wall of China is perhaps the wonder of the world that has most captured the human imagination, and as the quotes about it indicate, the wall has acquired special significance even outside of China. The places and ways in which it has taken hold vary greatly, but one thing is certain: the Great Wall of China is as amazing as it is mysterious, and it’s as mundane as it is magical. Naturally, the Wall has become the most recognizable symbol of China, used for both aggrandizement and criticism. Nationalists see it as a symbol of China's peaceful nature, engineering capability, and historic longevity, while detractors see the Wall as the embodiment of China's backwardness, closed-mindedness, and hubris. Though the wall can symbolize all of these things about China, it is important to remember that the many long walls. upon some of which the current landmark was constructed, were put up by specific people for specific purposes.
People across the world were excited when it was revealed in 1974 that archaeologists had uncovered a new and amazing find: an underground army consisting of thousands of clay soldiers, still standing at their posts despite being over 2,000 years old. In addition to the remarkable feats of craftsmanship and the size and scale of the Terracotta Army, modern people could not quite wrap their minds around.
