Sinossi

Salt Trading History explores the surprisingly pivotal role of salt in shaping human civilization. Beyond its necessity for food preservation, salt functioned as a critical currency and a driver of economic systems throughout history. For example, ancient Roman soldiers were sometimes paid with salt, giving rise to the word "salary," illustrating salt’s high value in bygone eras. The book examines how control over salt resources and trade routes significantly influenced the wealth and power of cities and nations.

The book traces salt's journey from a scarce, vital resource to an abundant commodity, highlighting the economic and historical transformations driven by salt. From ancient trade routes like the Silk Road, where salt was a cornerstone of commerce, to modern extraction techniques, the book illustrates how technological advancements drastically increased salt production, with significant environmental consequences like soil salinization. By integrating insights from economic history, anthropology, and environmental science, it offers a comprehensive understanding of salt's enduring legacy.

The narrative progresses from salt's essential role in ancient civilizations to its impact on global trade networks and concludes with the consequences of modern salt production. This approach provides readers with valuable insights into the past and present, revealing the hidden forces that have shaped human societies.

Money laundering is as old as money itself – and yet the laws designed to prevent it are as ineffective as they ever have been.
Today's anti-money laundering (AML) regulations were designed to eliminate profits from drug trafficking and combat tax evasion, terrorism and the spread of weapons of mass destruction. However, the modern laws have done little to stop crime and have instead significantly increased the regulatory burden on legitimate businesses and consumers. As one banker at an AML conference quipped, 'This does not stop money laundering; it just enables those in the know to charge more.'
Indeed, AML laws have laid the foundations for massive and sophisticated criminal enterprise support services that help criminals evade detection.
How to Launder Money: A guide for law enforcement, prosecutors and policymakers offers a peek behind the veil to see the bent levers of finance and how they are pulled. It also examines how many who have pulled them, including one of the authors, have ended up behind bars. While acknowledging the challenges faced by law enforcement in a borderless world, it also provides concrete recommendations on how to reduce the crime associated with money laundering.
The criminals already know how to launder money; this is, in part, their inside story. This book is for the rest of us, who want to know how the laws that are supposed to protect us from crime are in reality doing more damage than ever before.

The Riot Act was passed by the British Parliament in 1714, the first year of the reign of George I, and came into effect in August 1715. This was a time of widespread social disturbance, as the preamble describes; the Act sought to put an end to this. A group of twelve or more people, “being unlawfully, riotously and tumultuously assembled”, would be read a proclamation; they must disperse within an hour, on pain of death. The same fate would befall anyone preventing the reading of the proclamation, or damaging buildings while on a riot. If the law enforcement officers happened to injure or kill a rioter, they were immune from prosecution. The reading of the proclamation, the wording of which is detailed in the Act, was the necessary first step before action could be taken against the rioters. This gave us the phrase “to read the riot act”, to give a stern warning or rebuke. The Act was repealed in Britain in 1973, but had long since fallen into disuse there. A version is still in force in Canada.
