~~~~~ PG Excerpt ~~~~~
Trees and bushes tore at her skin. She ran until her lungs burned, and then she ran some more. A star athlete in college and a dedicated fitness enthusiast, she let her training take over, setting a hard pace as she dashed over and under obstacles. Time melted away. She had run far enough that whatever was behind her should have either caught her or given up, but fear drove her forward. Shadows grew in the forest as the sun retreated behind the mountains and trees. The sun lingered on the horizon casting its last rays before settling down for the night. As Janice burst into a clearing of trees, her leg caught on a rotting branch, throwing her to the ground. She collided against the hard Earth with a sickening thud.
Janice tried to stand up and keep moving, but pain seared up her ankle. She stumbled forward two paces when she heard something moving in front of her. A giant Brown bear lumbered into the clearing. It must have tracked her all the way from the river. She realized that, even before her ankle twisted, she never had a chance to outrun her pursuer.
The bear swung its head side to side, froth dripping from its mouth. It sniffed at Janice with its long snout and reared up on massive hind legs, roaring into the tree tops. Janice cowered in a ball, trying to remain as motionless as possible. She clenched her eyes shut as she waited for the inevitable and hoped for a quick end.
Both Janice and the bear flinched at the sound of another beast roaring in the forest. Moments later, the echoes faded away and were replaced by the sound of heavy feet moving through the underbrush astonishingly fast. Janice put her hands on her head and got as low to the ground as possible. The bear snarled and stood to its full height, blocking out the moon.
    The last thing I expected when I walked into my house after deployment was to find my high school crush standing in my hallway in nothing but a towel.Welcome back to Huckleberry Creek, Gabe.Turns out my matchmaking grandmother "forgot" to mention she rented my place out while I was overseas—to Felicity Harmon, sunshine incarnate and exactly the kind of woman I have no business wanting. I tell myself I can handle it. Stay grumpy, keep it friendly, fix her house, and get her back where she belongs.But then we're roommates. Then she's making me laugh. Cooking for me. Curling up beside me on the couch like it's the most natural thing in the world. And suddenly, everything I thought I could keep bottled up is bleeding out between shared dinners, stolen glances, and one very nosy grandma who's clearly rooting for a happily ever after.She deserves more than a grumpy contractor still trying to get his feet under him after deployment. But the closer we get, the more I start to believe maybe I've been wrong about what I can offer—and who I want to offer it to.She's always been the dream. The gamble I never had the guts to take. Until now.
    "Of course we are aliens how could I not believe in us?" said the not-so-human Blake.
    “Sarah Hall is one of those rare writers whose short fiction has the same luminosity as her novels. But the short form allows her more room to probe and roam, to experiment with form, to sink her fingers into the earth.”—The Observer (London)
    Featuring her signature themes of identity, eroticism, and existential quest, the stories in Sarah Hall’s third collection travel far afield in location and ambition—from Turkish forest and coastline to the rain-drenched villages of Cumbria.
    The characters in Sudden Traveler walk, drive, dream, and fly, trying to reconcile themselves with their journeys through life, death, and love. Science fiction meets folktale and philosophy meets mortality.
    A woman with a new generation of pacemaker chooses to shut it down in the Lakeland, the site of her strongest memories. A man repatriated in the near east hears the name of an old love called and must unpack history’s dark suitcase. From the new world-waves of female anger and resistance, a mythical creature evolves. And in the woods on the border between warring countries, an old well facilitates a dictator’s downfall, before he gains power.
    A master of short fiction, Sarah Hall opens channels in the human mind and spirit and takes us to the very edge of our possible selves.
