World-renowned philosopher A. C. Grayling explores the messy politics of the 'culture wars'

It seems like we can't talk about anything nowadays . . . Whether it's war or something utterly inconsequential, the internet is primed for furor. And the results can be horrifying—from online pile ons and doxing to job loss and, in some cases, death. But how did we end up here?

Nuanced and historically grounded, A. C. Grayling searches for middle ground in an otherwise incendiary debate. Looking at the history of cancellation, from Ancient Greek 'ostracism' through hemlock cups, witch trials, and the House of Un-American Activities, Discriminations is a timely examination of the state of our public culture and the chilling effect it's having on intellectual discourse.

Jennings is both a Buddhist practitioner and a psychologist. Here she talks about when it’s appropriate to bring our psychological struggles to our Buddhist teacher and when it is appropriate to bring them to a therapist.
In general, Jennings says the differences between them are: “When you are working with a therapist or an analyst, there is a sense of very personal explorations. The lens is to go in close and look at the particularities of the way a patient has gone through their life with very particular parents, family system, and culture, etc. Buddhist teachers tend to zoom out, and explore suffering from a more universal lens. So, when their Western students come to them with particular personal problems, they’ll tend to respond from this universal perspective that these are all manifestations of the same tendencies we all have.”
She discusses how each has much to give and addresses the value of having a spiritual community where you can look for support and have conversations, as contrasted to the psycho-analytic process where it is a one-on-one and the support comes from a single individual in the form of the therapist. Over the course of its history, England has engaged in an uncountable number of battles, but a select few have been celebrated like the Battle of Trafalgar, one of the most important naval battles in history. Before the battle, Napoleon still harbored dreams of sailing an invasion force across the English Channel and subduing England, but that would be dashed on October 21, 1805 by a British fleet that was outnumbered and outgunned. The impact of Trafalgar cannot be overstated, as it literally set the stage for the rest of the Napoleonic Era. Unable to invade England, Napoleon was limited to conducting war on the European continent, and while he spent the better part of a decade frustrating the British and their allies, he was eventually undone at Leipzig and then Waterloo nearly a decade after Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar.
For those questioning why generals continued using tactics from the Napoleonic Era even as technology changed the battlefield, the Battle of Austerlitz may provide the best answer. Napoleon is regarded as one of history’s greatest generals, and Austerlitz was his greatest victory. In 1805, Britain, Austria, and Russia allied together to form the Third Coalition against the French, and the Third Coalition’s forces consisted of armies from Austria and Russia, with Britain providing naval support as well as its financial powers. The Battle of Austerlitz was a tactical masterpiece that saw Napoleon actually invite an attack on his army by the bigger Coalition army, and over the course of about 9 hours, the French successfully defended their right flank while counterattacking in the center and splitting the Russo-Austrian army in two, allowing the French to hit the flank of the advancing left wing of the enemy. The result was a decisive victory that virtually annihilated the Third Coalition’s army and made Napoleon the master of the European continent.

Urbanization refers to the process by which an increasing proportion of a population comes to reside in urban areas, often transforming rural landscapes into bustling cities. It is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon that encompasses social, economic, cultural, and environmental changes. The rapid expansion of urban areas is one of the most defining features of modern society, reflecting humanity's growing tendency to cluster in cities for opportunities, convenience, and better access to resources.
Historically, urbanization began with the establishment of early agricultural settlements, which served as hubs for trade and governance. Over time, these settlements grew into cities as advancements in technology, transportation, and infrastructure facilitated their expansion. The Industrial Revolution, in particular, marked a pivotal moment in the history of urbanization, drawing large numbers of people into urban centers in search of work and prosperity. Today, urbanization continues at an unprecedented pace, driven by industrial growth, globalization, and population migration from rural to urban regions.
The scope of urbanization extends far beyond the mere growth of cities. It profoundly influences nearly every aspect of human life, from economic development to social interactions and environmental sustainability. Economically, cities serve as engines of growth, innovation, and creativity, offering concentrated markets, skilled labor, and access to advanced infrastructure. Socially, urban areas often promote cultural exchange and diversity, creating spaces where people from different backgrounds can interact and collaborate. However, this growth also comes with challenges, such as overcrowding, inequality, and the strain on public services and infrastructure.
