Sinossi

Ships Burned explores the underappreciated history of deliberately destroying ships in naval warfare, revealing how burning and scuttling vessels often served as calculated strategic decisions rather than desperate acts. This book illuminates how these actions shaped conflicts and altered naval history. One intriguing fact is that burning ships were used offensively as fire ships to devastate enemy fleets, while scuttling served defensively to deny resources and preserve strategic advantages. This approach of destruction was as vital as construction in naval strategy. The book examines the tactical use of fire and the strategic value of scuttling across different eras. Starting from ancient times, it progresses through the age of sail, highlighting the rise of fire ships and sophisticated scuttling techniques. It then analyzes ship burning in modern conflicts, including both World Wars. Ships Burned draws from historical documents, archaeological findings, and naval analysis to offer a comprehensive understanding of why ships were intentionally destroyed.

Forgotten Souls - The Search for...

NPR investigative journalist and the daughter of a Tuskegee Airman, Cheryl W. Thompson explores the stories of the 27 Tuskegee Airmen—the Black pilots who fought for America in WWII—who went missing in combat, the lives they lived, the reasons their planes went down, why the remains of all but two were never found, and the impact their disappearances had on their families and communities.

In 1945, World War II ended one of the deadliest conflicts in history. Geared for battle were nearly 1,000 trailblazing Black pilots trained at the Tuskegee Army Air Field, an unrepentantly segregated facility in Alabama. Hailing from the Iowa cornfields to the Texas Gulf Coast to the tobacco plantations of North Carolina, the Tuskegee Airmen already proved, under the toughest circumstances, to be among the most resilient and defiantly patriotic men of the Army Air Corps.

Twenty-seven of them disappeared during the final critical missions in Europe. So, too, would the government’s efforts to find them or help to bring closure to the loved ones that the valiant 332nd Fighter Group left behind.

In Forgotten Souls, award-winning investigative journalist Cheryl W. Thompson delves into the true stories of the Black combat pilots who faced unimaginable racism—before, during and after the war—from a military that told them they were less than, even as their courage and aviation prowess saved scores of White brothers-in-arms from the enemy and possibly death.

As cruel as war itself could be, the friends, family, communities and fellow Tuskegee Airmen who mourned the lost pilots never imagined how unforgivable it could get. After 80 years, Forgotten Souls honors the impact they made, and the sacrifices they endured on America’s behalf.

“Forgotten Souls is a tenacious reporting journey that illuminates a part of American history too often relegated to the shadows. Its exploration ensures heroic men and women won’t be forgotten, starting with the author’s own father.”—Robert Samuels, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of His Name Is George Floyd

The End of Feudalism - How...

Feudalism was a social, political, and economic system that dominated medieval Europe, particularly from the 9th to the 15th century. Its structure was based on the exchange of land for loyalty, military service, and labor. At its core, feudalism established a hierarchical order in which the king, or monarch, granted land, known as fiefs, to vassals (nobles) in exchange for their service. In turn, these vassals would grant portions of their land to serfs or peasants, who worked the land in return for protection and sustenance. This land-based economy was highly localized, with power concentrated in the hands of a few, and much of daily life revolved around agricultural production.
The decline of feudalism did not happen overnight but was a gradual process influenced by several interconnected factors. Key to its decline was the increasing centralization of power by monarchs. As monarchs gained more control, often through military conquest or strategic marriages, they began to diminish the power of feudal lords. This shift marked the beginning of the nation-state as a powerful political entity, replacing the decentralized feudal system. Additionally, the rise of a money-based economy undermined the land-based economy that feudalism relied upon. The growth of trade, the development of markets, and the emergence of a merchant class further destabilized feudal structures.
Another critical event in the decline of feudalism was the Black Death in the 14th century. The plague decimated large portions of Europe’s population, resulting in severe labor shortages. This, in turn, weakened the traditional feudal relationships between lords and serfs. With fewer workers available, peasants were able to demand better conditions, higher wages, or even freedom from their obligations. This shift in labor dynamics helped to weaken the power of feudal lords, who could no longer rely on a subjugated, large labor force to maintain their estates.
