Sinossi

Roman Gladiators explores the multifaceted world of gladiatorial combat in ancient Rome, revealing how these spectacles were deeply intertwined with Roman society, politics, and culture. The book argues that gladiatorial games were more than mere entertainment; they served as a powerful tool for social control and political propaganda. For instance, gladiatorial contests often featured diverse combat styles reflecting Rome's vast empire, showcasing the skills of warriors from conquered lands. Similarly, the fate of a defeated gladiator often rested on the crowd's decision, demonstrating the emperor's power to sway public opinion.

The book begins by tracing the origins and evolution of gladiatorial combat, then delves into the rigorous training regimes and diverse weaponry used in gladiatorial schools. It examines the social status of gladiators, often slaves or prisoners of war, and their occasional paths to fame and freedom. Finally, the narrative explores the decline of gladiatorial combat and its lasting legacy. By examining archaeological findings, literary accounts, and artistic representations, the book offers a balanced perspective on the role of gladiators in Roman history.

Before the mid-19th century, European intervention in much of tropical Africa was extremely difficult because of the disease gradient. The combination of malaria and yellow fever commonly killed off half of European troops stationed in West Africa each year. It was the reverse of the conquest of the Americas, where introduced diseases wiped out 50 million indigenous Americans, opening the land to settlement and greatly reducing the ability to resist. This was much less of a problem in temperate southern Africa, accounting for the Dutch being able to set up a colony there in the 17th century.
The political situation was also important. Germany did not exist as a nation until 1871, when the German Empire was declared, following the decisive defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Germany united into a single nation under the former king of Prussia, who became kaiser (meaning emperor). Previously, Germany had been a linguistic and cultural region fragmented into a welter of kingdoms, dukedoms, margraviates, bishoprics, and free cities.
The German Empire would prove to be the most short-lived of all, because, along with the Russian and Ottoman Empires, it did not survive World War I. In 1919, Germany lost all of its African colonies, which then accrued as League of Nations mandated territories either to France or Britain. The mandate over German South West Africa, the future Namibia, was placed under British control by proxy, and its day-to-day administration was handled from South Africa. Ultimately, South Africa absorbed South West Africa as a virtual province and resisted pressure to cede authority to the United Nations for decades. However, the contest between Germany and Britain on the African continent during the late 19th century would also create the conditions that led to the North Africa Campaign in World War II.

If God loves us and is so powerful, why does God allow disease and natural disasters, as well as terrorism and other human atrocities? What are some true stories of Catholics today who faced significant suffering and now see the good that God brought from it?
Catholic Stories of Faith and Hope provides a Catholic response to the big question, “Why would a loving God allow evil, pain, and suffering?” This includes exploring why God would allow disease and natural disasters (natural evil) and evil human behavior (moral evil), as well as how suffering can help us find a deeper meaning and purpose in life. This book contains several poignant and inspiring personal testimonies of Catholics who have dealt positively with significant suffering in their own lives. These stories provide contemporary accounts of how suffering can lead to personal and spiritual growth and bring us closer to God, others, and the Church. Catholic Stories of Faith and Hope helps us see suffering and hardship as an opportunity to experience God’s grace and love by focusing on Jesus Christ, who experienced profound pain and suffering himself and who cares deeply about our own suffering.
Catholic Stories of Faith and Hope helps readers undertake the Spiritual Works of Mercy to “comfort the afflicted,” “counsel the doubtful,” and “educate the uninformed.” Understanding the purpose of suffering and the greater good that can come from it will help us and those we love become better, instead of bitter, when facing life’s inevitable hardships and difficulties.
