Sinossi

"Pirate Code What" offers a fascinating exploration of the sophisticated governance systems that emerged during the Golden Age of Piracy (1650-1730), revealing how these seafaring outlaws developed complex organizational structures that were surprisingly democratic and egalitarian. The book challenges common perceptions of pirates as mere criminals, instead presenting them as pioneers of workers' rights and democratic organization at sea. Through meticulous analysis of court records, ship logs, and surviving documents, the book examines three crucial aspects of pirate society: formal written articles, unwritten customs, and the evolution of these regulations over time. One of the most intriguing revelations is how pirate codes emerged as a direct response to the harsh conditions and arbitrary rule aboard merchant and naval vessels, establishing fair resource distribution and democratic decision-making processes that were centuries ahead of their time. The narrative progresses from the historical origins of pirate codes in buccaneer articles to specific examples from famous pirates like Bartholomew Roberts, before concluding with an analysis of their lasting influence on maritime law and organizational behavior.Written in an accessible yet scholarly style, the book connects these historical practices to modern concepts of workplace democracy and social equality, making it valuable for both academic researchers and general readers interested in maritime history. The comprehensive examination of primary sources and archaeological findings provides a well-rounded understanding of how these codes shaped both pirate society and subsequent maritime traditions.

A new assessment of the Falklands War from the Argentine perspective.

In 1982, the United Kingdom and Argentina fought a war over an historical disagreement over the colonial “ownership” or rights over the Falkland Islands. Within months of the Argentinian defeat, General Edgardo Calvi, then the Argentine Head of the Army Joint Chief of Staff, was instructed to undertake a wide-ranging and formal inquiry to investigate the performance of the Argentine Army during the Falklands. Calvi concluded that while the Army had the motivation, it lacked the organization, equipment, training, and ability to oppose an army capable of operating in a variety of environments. The war exposed political, military, and public weaknesses in a period of considerable internal unrest during the seven years of the Dirty War. Several senior officers who fought in the Falklands were imprisoned for offenses committed during the Dirty War. Secrecy and political disagreements isolated the Service chiefs of staff from the logistic and operational planning. This book tells the story of the Falklands War from the Argentine Army perspective.

The Holodomor, one of the most tragic events in Ukrainian history, refers to the man-made famine that devastated Ukraine from 1932 to 1933. The name "Holodomor" itself is derived from two Ukrainian words: "holod," meaning hunger, and "moryty," meaning extermination. This term emphasizes the belief that the famine was deliberately engineered by Joseph Stalin's Soviet government as part of a broader effort to suppress Ukrainian nationalism and enforce Soviet control.
The historical context of the Holodomor is deeply intertwined with the policies of Soviet Russia during the early 20th century. Under Stalin’s rule, the Soviet Union sought rapid industrialization and forced collectivization of agriculture, a process that involved the consolidation of individual farms into large collective ones. These policies were highly disruptive and led to widespread resistance, especially in Ukraine, where peasants valued their land and traditional agricultural practices.
In response to this resistance, Stalin imposed harsh measures on Ukraine, including the confiscation of grain, livestock, and other foodstuffs, which were sent to feed other parts of the Soviet Union. This created a devastating shortage of food in Ukraine, which was compounded by the harsh climate and poor harvests. Despite the widespread suffering and starvation, the Soviet government did little to alleviate the crisis and instead imposed strict controls on food distribution. In some cases, officials even enforced internal borders, preventing starving people from fleeing to neighboring regions in search of food.

The Great Famine of 1315-1317 stands as one of the darkest periods in European history, marking a time of immense suffering, social upheaval, and devastation. It was not a single event but rather a prolonged crisis, which compounded existing vulnerabilities within medieval European society. The origins of the famine can be traced back to a confluence of environmental, social, and economic factors, all of which led to one of the worst food shortages ever experienced on the continent.
The famine’s roots can be found in the dramatic climatic changes of the early 14th century. The period known as the Little Ice Age brought cooler temperatures, and the years leading up to the famine saw unusual weather patterns. Prolonged rain, particularly during the summer months of 1315, led to flooding and crop failure, especially in regions dependent on staple grains like wheat, oats, and barley. The disastrous harvests were compounded by already strained food supplies and a growing population.
The impact of the famine was felt most acutely by the poorer classes, whose subsistence farming could not sustain them through such harsh conditions. The majority of the population in rural areas relied on farming for food and income, and with crops failing, their livelihoods were destroyed. Urban centers, though slightly better equipped to withstand hardship, faced sharp increases in food prices, making it difficult for even the wealthier classes to procure sustenance. Starvation, malnutrition, and poverty became widespread, leading to mass suffering across the continent.

‘Popular history at its very best, thought-provoking and accessible. Underpinned by serious research, and written with panache, it summons up a vanished world’ SUNDAY TELEGRAPH
This is an astonishing new account of Alexander the Great – one of the most important figures of the ancient world, whose earlier years have until now been a mystery.
Alexander the Great’s story often reads like fiction: son to a snake-loving mother and a battle-scarred father; tutored by Aristotle; a youth from the periphery of the Greek world who took part in his first campaign aged sixteen, becoming king of Macedon at twenty and king of Asia by twenty-five; leading his armies into battle like a Homeric figure.
Each generation has peered through the frosted glass of history and come to their own conclusion about Alexander, be it enlightened ruler, military genius, megalomaniac, drunkard or despot. Yet the first two decades of his life have until now been a mystery – a matter of legend and myth. This extraordinary history draws on new discoveries in archaeology to tell the early story of Alexander and his rise – including detail on the tempestuous relationship between Alexander’s parents, Philip and the Molossian princess Olympias, his education by Aristotle and the strict military training which would serve him so well in later years. And more than ever, it emerges, the story of Alexander’s reign confronts us with difficult questions that are still relevant today – of the relationship between East and West, the legacy of colonialism and the impacts of authoritarian rule.
Drawing together startling modern archaeological discoveries, this book brings Alexander’s ancient world back into focus. With each fragment of this shattered past, excavated by shovel, pick and trowel, a new history is being written. The forgotten story of young Alexander is being unearthed.
This historical biography of Alexander the Great, written with a top-notch narrative style, delves into the heart of the Byzantine empire, shedding light on its civilisation. The book, a masterpiece by Alex Rowson, is a must-read for anyone interested in the social dynamics of ancient Greece.
