  The inner workings of diversion programs are obscure, partially by design, and data on outcomes is hard to come by. Stitt draws on two years of fieldwork in criminal courtrooms and court-mandated treatment sessions, as well as an original national dataset, in-depth interviews, and experimental survey data, to document the hidden impacts of diversion. She shows that placing mental healthcare under the control of the courts has helped to legitimize the criminalization of illness, warped treatment environments, and amplified inequalities in punishment.   The painting of her on the battlefield with only one breast covered and holding a flag is probably one of the most famous paintings from European history. Many people have heard of Joan of Arc, but only few know what she did or how her life was. 
  Joan of Arc (French: Jeanne d' Arc) is a French heroine who was venerated as a saint for her role in the Lancastrian part of the Hundred Years' War. She was born in Domrémy, in the Vosges area of northeast France, to Jacques d' Arc and Isabelle Romée, a peasant family. Joan said she saw visions of the archangel Michael, Saint Margaret, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria telling her to support Charles VII and free France from English supremacy late in the Hundred Years' War. Joan was sent out as part of a relief army to the siege of Orléans by the as-yet-unanointed King Charles VII. After the siege was raised only 9 days later, she rose to fame. 
  She ended up being a sign of the Catholic League in the 16th century, and Napoleon Bonaparte called her a nationwide sign of France in 1803. 
  In 1909, she was beatified, and in 1920, she was canonized. One of France's 9 secondary tutelary saint is Joan of Arc. 
  Since her death, Joan of Arc has stayed a popular character in literature, painting, sculpture, and other cultural works, with many popular authors, playwrights, filmmakers, artists, and composers creating and continuing to produce cultural representations of her.

  Habitual drug use in the United States is at least as old as the nation itself. Habit Forming traces the history of unregulated drug use and dependency before 1914, when the Harrison Narcotic Tax Act limited sales of opiates and cocaine under US law. Many Americans used opiates and other drugs medically and became addicted. Some tried Hasheesh Candy, injected morphine, or visited opium dens, but neither use nor addiction was linked to crime, due to the dearth of restrictive laws. After the Civil War, American presses published extensively about domestic addiction. Later in the nineteenth century, many used cocaine and heroin as medicine. As addiction became a major public health issue, commentators typically sympathized with white, middle-class drug users, while criticizing such use by poor or working-class people and people of color. When habituation was associated with middle-class morphine users, few advocated for restricted drug access. By the 1910s, as use was increasingly associated with poor young men, support for regulations increased. In outlawing users' access to habit-forming drugs at the national level, a public health problem became a larger legal and social problem, one with an enduring influence on American drug laws and their enforcement.
