Sinossi

Global Security Talks examines the crucial role of international security conferences in shaping global defense strategies and resolving conflicts, while acknowledging inherent limitations. These talks, from UN Security Council meetings to regional summits, serve as vital platforms for dialogue. The book argues that despite their importance, these conferences often fall short due to geopolitical realities and systemic issues, resulting in a gap between intended outcomes and actual impact.

One key insight is that divergent interests among participating states frequently hinder the implementation of agreements, challenging the assumption that dialogue alone guarantees solutions to complex security problems. The book explores the evolution of global security talks through the 20th and 21st centuries, referencing landmark events like the Congress of Vienna and summits on nuclear disarmament. It presents case studies to assess the contributions of past and present conferences to conflict prevention and arms control.

The book unfolds in three parts, beginning with theoretical underpinnings, progressing to detailed case studies, and concluding with a critical assessment offering strategies for enhancing conference effectiveness. This approach highlights the need for realistic expectations and effective mechanisms to translate dialogue into concrete action.

To the ancient Egyptians, the gods and goddesses were all around them and could be seen daily in nature. Nearly every animal found in ancient Egypt, both domestic and wild, were associated with a god or goddess, which can be seen in Egyptian art where deities are often depicted with human bodies and animal heads. Or sometimes the deities are portrayed as complete animals. Since deities were associated with certain animals, all animals of a specific species were given divine and protected status. The reverence that ancient Egyptians had for certain animals evolved during the long duration of Pharaonic history until by the Late Period animals of specific species were mummified by the thousands as offerings for their associated deities.
Ancient Greece and its mythology has fascinated people for thousands of years, and few elements have intrigued people quite like the Eleusinian Mysteries, which the Greeks believed transformed the initiates and gave them knowledge that eased both the living of life on earth and allayed fears of death, allowing an acceptance of their ultimate fate. The influence of the Eleusinian Mysteries was also far reaching; for example, the Telesterion is reminiscent of the labyrinthine, symbolic structures that can be found all over pre-historic Europe, ranging from those in Ireland to Malta and Crete to the Shetlands. The larger precinct of Eleusis, combining as it did caves, terraces and buildings carved into the rock again, all echo that ancient past.
The cult of Mithras was not a creation of the Romans, although they would eventually add their own rituals and mysteries to the ancient religion. In fact, the Mithraic religion was an Indo-Persian creation, a theology which managed to travel from India and back into the Hellenic and Roman world by way of Alexander the Great’s conquest of the Persian Empire. Eventually, the cult of Mithras would spread across the ancient world.

Thirteen colonies which are now a part of United States of America were initially colonies of Great Britain. People were discontented with the British rule and rebels evoked among the colonies. People were getting exhausted of the horrendous taxes that were imposed on them. In 1746, the Revenue Act made it obligatory for the King to tax the thirteen colonies whether they liked it or not which eventually led to a war. The local practices, social and religious customs of the Americans were swerving ominously from the English ways and added to the budding causes of conflicts. Mercantilism and Navigation Acts were policies favoured by the British in order to control trade in British interest; however these were loosely enforced allowing colonies to grow spontaneously with negligible intrusion from the British.
The Treaty of Paris officially documented the new nation in 1783 with many questions still unanswered. United Stated splashed through a post war depression only to confront administrative problems under the Articles of Confederation.
The new leaders of the country were people who were visible on the Revolution fields or council halls and the country’s first three Presidents were George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. The more radical leaders of the Revolution were unhappy with the turn towards obscurantism once the war was over, but democracy and liberty had now been secured as the utmost ideals of the free nation.
The Revolution had an inordinate impact on liberal beliefs all over Europe. The scuffles and achievements of the young democracy were much in the thoughts of those who brought about the French Revolution, and most definitely later helped to stimulate revolutionists in Spain's American colonies.

Sounds of Other Shores takes an ethnographic ear to the history of transoceanic stylistic appropriation in the Swahili taarab music of the Kenyan coast. Swahili taarab, a form of sung poetry that emerged as East Africa's first mass-mediated popular music in the 1930s, is a famously cosmopolitan form, rich in audible influences from across the Indian Ocean. But the variants of the genre that emerged in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa during the twentieth century feature particularly dramatic, even flamboyant, appropriations of Indian and Arab sonic gestures and styles. Combining oral history, interpretive ethnography, and musical analysis, Sounds of Other Shores explores how Swahili-speaking Muslims in twentieth-century Mombasa derived pleasure and meaning from acts of transoceanic musical appropriation, arguing that these acts served as ways of reflecting on and mediating the complexities and contradictions associated with being "Swahili" in colonial and postcolonial Kenya. The result is a musical anthropology of Kenyan Swahili subjectivity that reframes longstanding questions about Swahili identity while contributing to broader discussions about identity and citizenship in Africa and the Indian Ocean world.
