In Democracy Lives in Darkness, Emily Van Duyn discovers and follows a secret political organization of progressive women in a conservative community in rural Texas. Its members met in secret to protect themselves from retaliation by their conservative neighbors, friends, and family. They discussed immigrant rights, women's reproductive rights, racism, and intolerance of those of different racial/ethnic and cultural backgrounds in their community. Democracy Lives in Darkness is about this group: their daily lives, their choices, and ultimately, their incubation. But it is also about what led them to meet in secret—the political prejudice and hostility that marginalizes and makes people afraid, and the growing political, social, and geographic cleavages that now make even mainstream dissent dangerous.

Van Duyn asks why mainstream partisans feel the need to hide their political beliefs from others, why they feel afraid of those from the opposite party, how they stay politically engaged in secret, and how this can transform them and their communities. Van Duyn challenges the assumption that the United States is a liberal democracy where ideas can be expressed freely and publicly. Rather, she suggests that democracy in the United States may exist in darkness, but, more optimistically, that it uses this darkness to move forward.

The American workplace exhibits a growing imbalance when it comes to human identity. Leaders are frequently defined in the absence of their critical social identifiers, but the exclusion of these identifiers is a mistake and ignores essential physical, cultural, and spiritual realities. Their exclusion is especially problematic for leaders of the Black identity and the Christian faith. Color-blind ideology harms people of color, while religion-blind systems damage people of faith, and both are especially problematic for individuals who reckon with both realities.

Rather than abandoning an individual's social identities, the ones we choose and the ones we do not, Leading While Black draws on the lived experiences of executive-level leaders of the Christian faith and Black identity, and offers a testament to the power of a living God in the social fabric of public life. Instead of ignoring the narrative arc of social identities and the weight they carry when considering an individual's conception of leadership, Torrance Jones leans into the value of those identities and asserts their integral importance for Black leaders and for those who work with and for Black voices.

This book combo contains the following three titles:
Boomers Uncovered - "Boomers Uncovered" seeks to explore the life and legacy of the Baby Boomer generation, examining their profound influence on society, culture, and history. Born in the years following World War II, Baby Boomers shaped the world in ways both seen and unseen, leaving an indelible mark on the world stage. This generation, defined by its optimism, resourcefulness, and rapid growth, experienced some of the most transformative decades in modern history. They not only witnessed but were active participants in the cultural, political, and technological revolutions that defined the second half of the 20th century.
Life as a Silent Gen - The Silent Generation, born between the mid-1920s and the early 1940s, is often characterized by its quiet strength and resilience. Unlike the more outspoken Baby Boomers or the politically vocal Millennials, members of this generation are sometimes referred to as the “silent” because they were raised in an era where conformity and restraint were the societal norms. Their lives unfolded during some of the most transformative and tumultuous events of the 20th century, including the Great Depression, World War II, and the early stages of the Cold War.
The X Factor - Generation X grew up in a rapidly changing world, marked by technological advancements, shifts in family dynamics, and significant political and economic changes. Many Gen Xers were raised during a time of uncertainty, from the economic recessions of the 1970s and early 1980s to the growing divorce rates and the rise of single-parent households. These formative experiences influenced their outlook on life, instilling in them a sense of independence, resilience, and adaptability. As a result, Generation X is often characterized as the "latchkey generation," having to navigate childhood with a degree of self-reliance that was uncommon in earlier times.

The early explorers set in motion a journey of discovery that would shape the destiny of a continent. Venturing into unknown lands with limited maps and few resources, these daring adventurers sought not only new trade routes and wealth but also the promise of uncharted territories. Their voyages were driven by curiosity, ambition, and in many cases, the desire to escape circumstances at home. With each step into unfamiliar territory, these pioneers faced challenges that tested their resilience and determination. Navigating vast rivers, towering mountain ranges, and endless stretches of dense forests, they pursued dreams that often ended in triumph as well as tragedy.
From the first accidental landfalls to the more deliberate exploratory expeditions, the stories of these early voyagers are filled with both brilliance and hardship. Many of the explorers were motivated by the promise of establishing new trade connections and expanding their nations’ borders. They set out with scientific instruments and compasses in hand, determined to chart the unknown. The natural phenomena they encountered—such as unusual weather patterns, peculiar rock formations, and unique animal species—sparked intense curiosity and led to detailed observations that formed the basis of early scientific inquiry in the New World. Their reports, albeit sometimes exaggerated, captured the imagination of those back home and often inspired further expeditions.
Encounters with the indigenous populations were a significant aspect of the early exploration period. While some interactions led to mutual exchange and cultural enrichment, others resulted in tension and conflict. The early explorers relied on guides from native tribes whose deep knowledge of the land provided invaluable assistance. In many instances, these native allies introduced new agricultural practices and survival techniques that enabled the explorers to adapt to the harsh wilderness.

A timely and deeply moving story of family, history, and Ukraine

In 2014, the landmarks of Victoria Belim’s personal geography were plunged into tumult at the hands of Russia. Her hometown, Kyiv, was gripped by protests and violence. Crimea, where she’d once been sent to school to avoid radiation from the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl, was invaded. Kharkiv,
where her grandmother Valentina studied economics and fell in love; Donetsk, where her father once worked; and Mariupol, where she and her mother bought a cherry tree for Valentina’s garden, all became battlegrounds.

Victoria, by then an American citizen living in Brussels, felt she had to go back. She had to spend time with her aging grandmother and her cousin Dima. She had to unravel a family mystery spanning several generations. And she needed to understand how a century of her country’s tragic history had
changed the course of their lives.

The Rooster House is a beautifully written memoir of a family, a country’s past, and its dangerous present. It is about parents and children, true believers and victims, gardens and art, secrets and tragedy. Compulsively readable, deeply moving, and at times laugh-out-loud funny, it is a stunning debut
book by an experienced, expressive, and gifted writer.
