Sinossi

Dante Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy" is an epic poem that traverses the realms of the afterlife, articulating a profound exploration of sin, redemption, and the soul's journey towards God. Written in the early 14th century, this landmark work is hailed for its innovative use of the vernacular Italian language, which enriched European literature and made complex theological and philosophical ideas accessible to a broader audience. The trilogy, comprising "Inferno," "Purgatorio," and "Paradiso," is renowned for its intricate narrative structure and vivid allegorical imagery, drawing heavily from medieval scholastic thought, classical literature, and the personal experiences of Dante himself. Dante, often regarded as the father of the Italian language, was profoundly influenced by the socio-political turmoil of his time, including his own exile from Florence. His experiences led him to reflect on the moral conditions of humanity and the intricate relationship between divine justice and human actions. The poem intricately weaves together his personal understanding of the human condition with the philosophical and theological discourses of medieval scholasticism, making it a rich tapestry of both personal reflection and universal truths. "The Divine Comedy" is a must-read for anyone interested in the intersections of literature, theology, and philosophy. Its timeless themes of love, justice, and the quest for meaning resonate as strongly today as they did in the 14th century. Readers are invited to join Dante on this transformative pilgrimage, offering a mirror to their own spiritual journeys and moral inquiries.

*SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2021 FORWARD PRIZE FOR BEST SINGLE POEM*
From the mercurial mind of award-winning poet John McCullough comes his darkest and most experimental book to date. Panic Response puts personal and cultural anxiety under the microscope. It is full of things that shimmer, quiver and fizz: plankton glowing at low tide; brain tissue turning to glass; a basketball emerging from the waves, covered in barnacles. These are poems of uncertainty but also of hope, which move beyond the breathlessness of panic towards luminescence and solidarity.

Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare's famous tragedy of two "star-crossed lovers" from rival houses. Romeo and Juliet meet at a party and fall instantly in love, realizing too late that their families, the Montagues and the Capulets, are mortal enemies. Braving parental opposition, the teenage lovers marry in secret, with the aid of the well-intentioned Friar Lawrence. Yet, as Shakespeare has often observed, the course of true love does not run smoothly, and Romeo and Juliet must risk death to be together.

NBCC Award Winner: “The narrative lyrics in this remarkable collection . . . could stand as compressed stories about anxiety and the body.” —The New York Times Vulnerable, tender, acute, these are serious poems, brave poems, exploring with honesty the ambiguous moment between the rapture of youth and the grace of acceptance. A daughter tends to aging parents. A woman struggles with infertility—“What if, instead of carrying / a child, I am supposed to carry grief?”—and a body seized by pain and vertigo as well as ecstasy. A nation convulses: “Every song of this country / has an unsung third stanza, something brutal.” And still National Book Award finalist Ada Limón shows us, as ever, the persistence of hunger, love, and joy, the dizzying fullness of our too-short lives. “Fine then, / I’ll take it,” she writes. “I’ll take it all.” “Gorgeous, thought-provoking . . . simple, striking images.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Exquisite.” —The Washington Post “Pitch-perfect . . . full of poems to savor and share . . . She writes with remarkable directness about painful experiences normally packaged in euphemism and, in doing so, invites the readers to enter a world where abundant joy exists alongside and simultaneous to loss.” —Minneapolis Star-TribuneWinner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry

    The Usefulness of Hippopotamus -...

I am staring at a blank piece of paper, wondering what to write. Where do I begin? My mind begins to wander—pleasant thoughts of Disney's Fantasia dance in my head. The dancing hippopotamus comes to mind, and this made me laugh. The result: I penned a poem on the hippopotamus from which a chapbook was born: The Usefulness of Hippopotamus: A Humorous Chapbook for Trying Times.
One cannot imagine a world without humor. Without humor, the world will be dark, cold, and a sad place, tragically lacking joy, cheerfulness, and laughter.
Humor is medicine. During rough times, humor will help lighten and lessen physical and mental anxiety.
In challenging times, I chose humor. During the Pandemic, I had to deal with my bladder cancer. In my struggle not to get depressed or dwell in negativity, to find solace, contentment, and peace, I chose to seek out beauty and laugh.
In search of happiness, the humor worked its charm, resulting in a treasure chest of joy. So, I wrote my chapbook, The Usefulness of Hippopotamus: A Humorous Chapbook for Trying Times, and discovered humor even among the hippopotami!
    You can, too.
    Peace & flowers.
    Love & light.
