  The European Union (EU) stands as one of the most ambitious projects of regional integration in modern history. The concept of a unified Europe, born out of the devastation of World War II, has evolved from an economic community among six founding nations to a political and economic powerhouse with 27 member states. The expansion of the EU has been a gradual process, driven by the desire to promote peace, stability, and prosperity across the continent. This expansion has not only reshaped the political landscape of Europe but also influenced the global order in profound ways. 
    
  The early history of the EU was marked by the establishment of the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1957, aimed at fostering economic cooperation and reducing the likelihood of future conflicts. Over time, the EEC transformed into the European Union, encompassing broader goals such as political cooperation, human rights, and environmental standards. Each enlargement of the EU has brought new nations into this framework, solidifying the idea of a united Europe. The process of integrating new member states, however, has not been without its challenges. Issues of economic disparity, political alignment, and social integration have tested the limits of the union and sparked debates about the future direction of the EU. 
    
  The most significant expansion occurred in 2004, when ten countries, predominantly from Central and Eastern Europe, joined the EU in a historic enlargement. This expansion marked the end of the Cold War divide and brought former communist nations into the European fold. Yet, it also highlighted the complexities of integrating countries with differing political histories, economic conditions, and social structures. The subsequent expansions in 2007 and 2013 saw Romania, Bulgaria, and Croatia join the EU, furthering the union’s reach into the Balkans.

  What happens when an entire community is moved?  
   
  Dakota Crescent was one of Singapore's oldest public housing estates and a rental flat neighbourhood for low-income households. In 2016, its residents—many of whom are elderly—were relocated to Cassia Crescent to make way for redevelopment. To help them resettle, a group of volunteers came together and formed the Cassia Resettlement Team. 
   
  They Told Us to Move tells the story of the relocation through interviews with the residents from the Dakota community and reflections by the volunteers. Accompanying these are essays by various academics on urban planning; gender and family; ageing, poverty, and social services; civil society and citizenship; and architectural heritage and place-making. Through this three-part conversation, the book explores human stories of devotion, expectation, and remembrance. It asks what we can achieve through voluntary action and how we can balance self-reliance and public services.

  The Germans produced cutting edge aerial technology during World War I, along with revolutionary dogfighting tactics and some of history’s first flying aces, including the most famous, the Red Baron. But ultimately, economic shortages and lack of manpower hampered the Germans in the air, even when their men and machinery proved superior at critical periods of the war. The story would not turn out the same a generation later. The Third Reich's Luftwaffe began World War II with significant advantages over other European air forces, playing a critical role in the German war machine's swift, powerful advance. By war's end, however, the Luftwaffe had been decimated by combat losses and crippled by poor decisions at the highest levels of military decision-making, and it proved unable to challenge Allied air superiority despite a last-minute upsurge in German aircraft production. 
  Given its unique strengths and distinctive weaknesses by the personal quirks of the men who developed it, the Luftwaffe initially overwhelmed the more conservative, outdated military aviation of other countries. Its leaders embraced such concepts as the dive-bomber, which proved both utterly devastating and extremely useful for supporting the sweeping, powerful movements of Blitzkrieg, while other martial establishments rejected dive-bombers as impractical or even impossible. 
  The Luftwaffe's eventual loss of aerial domination exposed the Germans to precisely the same misfortunes on the ground as they had once relentlessly inflicted on the Poles and Russians. During its heyday, however, the Luftwaffe amply proved the leading role played by air power in the modern combined arms formula. It also produced a remarkable number of aces, whose exploits overshadowed the finest pilots of the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, or the United States.
