Sinossi

In "Later Poems," Alice Meynell showcases a refined blend of lyrical beauty and contemplative introspection that encapsulates the essence of her poetic evolution. Composed during a period marked by profound personal reflection and societal change, these poems resonate with themes of nature, faith, and the transient nature of existence. Meynell's distinctive literary style is characterized by her mastery of imagery and rhythm, conveying profound emotions through concise yet vivid language, all while reflecting the broader movement of late Victorian poetry that sought to merge art with deeper existential inquiry. Alice Meynell, a prominent figure of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was not only a poet but also an influential critic and editor who championed the works of her contemporaries. Her literary journey is deeply intertwined with her experiences as a woman in a male-dominated landscape, and her exploration of faith and spirituality profoundly influenced her work. Her keen observations on the world, paired with personal trials and societal shifts, led Meynell to seek a poetic form that could articulate the complexities of human experience, profoundly mirrored in "Later Poems." I highly recommend "Later Poems" to enthusiasts of lyrical poetry and those interested in the exploration of the human condition through the lens of nature and spirituality. Meynell's eloquent verse offers an enriching experience that invites readers to ponder their own existence, making this collection a poignant addition to any literary archive.

Shunrō Oshikawa (1876-1914) was one the two most important founders of Japanese science fiction (the other being Unno Juza, 1897-1949). This story is a charming tribute to all those engaged in historical research. A young Portuguese child discovers an empty beer bottle on a beach. Her father, a well known scientist, discovers a message inside that may solve one of the greatest mysteries in the West African chronicles.
This is a radio version, and not a translation. It has been adapted for historyradio.org by Michael Henrik Wynn, and he also plays the part of the traveler.

This anthology of eleven stirring tales, composed in melodic rhyming couplets, sweeps readers into a realm where myth intertwines with romance across diverse landscapes: from the Peruvian Amazon to the plains of Africa, the vastness of the Pacific to the spiritual heights of Tibet. Each narrative celebrates the wild, noble beasts that champion the cause of their land: wolves liberating Athens, pumas safeguarding the Amazon, bears emancipating prisoners in wartime Germany, and more.
These creatures not only symbolize the spirit of their homelands but also the myths and history embedded within, now imperilled by relentless
     modernization.

Scott’s weaves a poetic tapestry reminiscent of Coleridge’s ‘Ancient Mariner,’ Kipling’s ‘Just So Stories,’ and the adventurous spirit of Patrick Leigh Fermor, all while channelling Mary Pope Osborne’s fascination with myth. It’s a literary mosaic, unparalleled in ambition, which speaks eloquently to the urgency of preserving our world’s cultural and ecological richness. The stories, though they grapple with themes of loss and environmental decay, also ignite hope for spiritual rebirth and the triumph of nature’s indomitable heart.

Loneliness, temptation, the fragility of man in a soulless new age . . . The controversial, banned masterpiece from the nineteenth-century French poet.   Sparking scandal in France, declared “an outrage to public morals” and “an offense to religious morals” by the Ministry of the Interior, The Flowers of Evil plunged Charles Baudelaire into a controversy that his public image never quite overcame. Nevertheless, the collection has since been lauded as a landmark in literary history and its writer extolled as the first modern poet.   With themes of love, world-weariness, beauty, and death, The Flowers of Evil juxtaposes the sublime with the commonplace. In the section titled “Parisian Scenes” are some of Baudelaire’s greatest poems—“The Swan,” “The Little Old Women,” and “The Seven Old Men”—which give readers an unsentimental view of the City of Light and of a bleak urban existence. As the Wall Street Journal proclaimed, “There is a sense in these angry, eructating late fragments of a man fully releasing himself to what he called ‘the joy of downward descent.’ And where Baudelaire went, modernity tended to follow.”  “The essence of a genius.” —The Guardian  “The profound originality of Charles Baudelaire is to represent powerfully and essentially modern man.” —Paul Verlaine

In his famed treatise Either/Or, Christian existentialist philosopher Søren Kierkegaard suggests that our basic human condition is one of choice and freedom. But what about when we struggle to discern the right path forward, when we stumble between contradictory desires, when we want everything? Such insatiability – which the ancient Greeks called pleonexia – leads to suffering and sorrow for ourselves and others, not to mention the earth we call home. But what about when "either/or" thinking becomes too rigid in its limits? What about those moments when we see scarcity instead of the many possibilities that abound, when fear keeps us from giving and receiving our full share?
This book of poetry is an exploration of those times when it is necessary to make either/or choices as well as other times when, even if only briefly, we are able to echo Richard Rohr in affirming, "Yes, And." It is a story of stumbling in darkness and seeking light, of succumbing to sinfulness and facing consequences, of desiring deeply and bumping up against limits. It's about addiction and recovery, justice and mercy, redemption found through friendship and community. It's about seeking ways to open doors and tear down walls. Ultimately, it is about the divine grace that occasionally manages to expand our possibilities, transforming us into vessels of boundless compassion.
