Sinossi

In 'William Blake,' Algernon Charles Swinburne embarks on an incisive examination of one of English literature's most enigmatic figures. The book marries rich poetry with fervent prose, reflecting Swinburne's admiration for Blake's innovative spirit and unique artistic philosophy. Swinburne's literary style oscillates between lyrical reverence and analytical rigor, as he delves into Blake's themes of visionary mysticism, social critique, and the tension between imagination and reality. Set against the backdrop of the Romantic era, this work invites readers to explore Blake's complex persona while considering the socio-political influences of his time. Algernon Charles Swinburne, a Victorian poet known for his groundbreaking use of meter and a fervent embrace of aestheticism, was profoundly influenced by Blake's revolutionary spirit. Struggling with his own identity within the rigid confines of Victorian society, Swinburne's fascination with Blake'Äôs counter-cultural stance and his use of myth and allegory reflects a deep desire to challenge conventional norms. This biography emerges from Swinburne's own quest for artistic autonomy and an understanding of the imaginative power that Blake epitomizes. 'William Blake' is highly recommended for scholars, poets, and anyone intrigued by the interplay of art and rebellion. Swinburne'Äôs profound insight and passionate advocacy for Blake not only illuminate the life of the poet-artist but also encourage readers to engage with the broader implications of creativity and imagination in their own lives. This book is essential for those wishing to understand the roots of modern poetic discourse.

A heartwarming philosophical meditation on how to live a fulfilling life—inspired by the inherent happiness of dogs.

If you have spent any part of your life with a dog, you may have found certain questions popping, unbidden, into your mind: Is my dog living a fulfilled life? Is my dog a good dog? Does my dog love me? Addressing these questions compels you to confront not just your dog's life but yours as well—to think about what fulfillment, and meaning, in life really is.

In The Word of Dog, philosopher Mark Rowlands explores these questions and suggests that in dogs we can see hints—faint, shrouded, but discernible—of what a better way of living might look like. Perhaps none of us can be happy in the way a dog can, but The Word of Dog shows us we could do a lot better than we're doing simply by listening to the unspoken wisdom our dogs reveal to us every day of their happy, uncomplicated lives.

The dramatic story of an ingenious man who explained nature and created a country.

Benjamin Franklin was one of the preeminent scientists of his time. Driven by curiosity, he conducted cutting-edge research on electricity, heat, ocean currents, weather patterns, chemical bonds, and plants. But today, Franklin is remembered more for his political prowess and diplomatic achievements than his scientific creativity.

In this incisive and rich account of Benjamin Franklin's life and career, Richard Munson recovers this vital part of Franklin's story, reveals his modern relevance, and offers a compelling portrait of a shrewd experimenter, clever innovator, and visionary physicist whose fame opened doors to negotiate French support and funding for American independence.

Munson's riveting narrative explores how science underpins Franklin's entire story—from tradesman to inventor to nation-founder—and argues that Franklin's political life cannot be understood without giving proper credit to his scientific accomplishments.

To the ancient Egyptians, the gods and goddesses were all around them and could be seen daily in nature. Nearly every animal found in ancient Egypt, both domestic and wild, were associated with a god or goddess, which can be seen in Egyptian art where deities are often depicted with human bodies and animal heads. Or sometimes the deities are portrayed as complete animals. Since deities were associated with certain animals, all animals of a specific species were given divine and protected status.
Animals were constantly involved in the core elements of Greek society and cults, and this centrality could be found in the numerous depictions of animals on coins and vases throughout the Greek colonies. Game and fish were plentiful, along with deer, wolves, boar, lynx, and even bears. Similarly, there were numerous jackals and porcupines. There were, however, a few significant species that would have been found in the wild in Classical times, such as the agrimis (or Cretan goat) and the lion, that have either become totally extinct or virtually extinct in the modern-day region. Lions, in particular, often feature in Greek literature, and both Herodotus and Aristotle described lions in northern Greece. The presence of lions in Greece seems further confirmed by their numerous portrayals in Mycenaean art and tales of lions in Homer.
Rome's complex relationship with animals goes right back to its foundation myth, and even today, the wolf remains a symbol of the Eternal City, forming part of the logo for the capital's football team, A.S. Roma. According to tradition, the city of Rome was founded by Romulus, who, with his brother Remus, was nursed and sheltered by a she-wolf. That tale, widely believed as a historical fact by ancient Romans, had a profound influence on Roman culture, and in part that shaped Roman attitudes toward their animals.
