Jack London's novel "The Road," written in the early 20th century, chronicles the adventures and struggles of a young man living as a hobo in America. It particularly emphasizes themes of survival, humanity, and social injustice. Through the protagonist's experiences, the novel delves into the plight of the disenfranchised and reveals the unvarnished truths about American society during that era.
The story begins with the young hobo reflecting on his past experiences, focusing on a specific moment in Reno, Nevada, in the summer of 1892. He shares his struggles with hunger, his attempts to beg for food, and his interactions with various characters, including a wealthy man and a kind woman. The narrative highlights the protagonist's resourcefulness and provides insight into the deep sociology of wanderers—how they cope with societal rejection and rely on the kindness of strangers.
The blend of humor and poignancy in his storytelling sets the tone for an exploration of the life and choices of hobos, as well as the challenges the protagonist faces in escaping the judgment of the world around him.

A book that pulses with life in the midst of death, The Magic Mountain is a mammoth masterpiece of erudition and irony, sexual tension, and intellectual ferment. Mann utilises a sanatorium in the Swiss Alps, a community dedicated solely to illness, as a microcosm for Europe, which in the years prior to 1914 was already displaying the initial signs of its own terminal madness, in this dizzyingly dense novel of ideas.Death in Venice tells the tale of Gustav von Aschenbach, a successful but ageing writer who follows his wanderlust to Venice in search of spiritual fulfilment but instead leads to his erotic doom. It was published on the eve of World War I, ten years after Buddenbrooks had established Thomas Mann as a literary celebrity.Foreword - Track 1Chapter 1. Arrival - Track 2Chapter 2. 5.0 out of 5 stars If you feel alone in your suffering, this is the book to hold.

Somehow, Michael has been able to take the most searing loss and transform it into words that bless, comfort and inspire. Two other resources help me with grief: the movie: What Dreams May Come and the CD/book, Graceful Passages. When She Died stands powerfully beside these masterpieces. It brings understanding, order, and compassion to the unthinkable, shocking and unbearable nature of loss.
Mish's words are eloquent, and cut to the core nature of sorrow without trite religious platitudes, psychological jargon, or a hint of falsehood. One receives a road map through the horrific shock of loss, and a steady guide to light your way.
The writing is clean and clear. Even if you're not currently dealing with a fresh grief, reading Michael's intimate reactions will touch and teach.
It is not maudlin or cloying. When She Died is clean, clear and clarifying. Furthermore, its a "page turner."
Couldn't put it down. Read in one sitting.

In this radiant work of creative nonfiction, internationally beloved novelist Val McDermid delivers a dazzling ode to a lost world, ruminating on a single winter in her life as she journeys into the heart of the season's ever-evolving community-based traditions
Val McDermid has always had a soft spot for winter: the bitter clarity of a crisp cold day, the crunch of frost on fallen leaves, and the chance to be enveloped in big jumpers and thick socks.
In Winter, McDermid takes us on an adventure through the season, from the frosty streets of Edinburgh to the windblown Scottish coast, from Bonfire Night and Christmas to Burns Night and Up Helly Aa. Recalling in parallel memories from her own childhood--of skating over frozen lakes and carving a "neep" (rutabaga) for Halloween to being taken to see her first real Christmas tree in the town square--McDermid offers a wise and enchanting meditation on winter and its ever-changing, sometimes ephemeral, traditions.
A hygge-filled journey through winter nights, McDermid reminds us that it is a time of rest, retreat and creativity, for scribbling in notebooks and settling in beside the fire. A treat for the hunkering-down, post-holiday reading season, Winter is a charming and cozy celebration of the year's idle months from one of Scotland's best-loved writers.
