Sinossi

The Count of Monte Cristo (French: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) is an adventure novel by French author Alexandre Dumas (père) completed in 1844. It is one of the author's most popular works, along with The Three Musketeers. Like many of his novels, it is expanded from plot outlines suggested by his collaborating ghostwriterAuguste Maquet. The story takes place in France, Italy, and islands in the Mediterranean during the historical events of 1815–1839: the era of the Bourbon Restoration through the reign ofLouis-Philippe of France. It begins just before the Hundred Days period (when Napoleon returned to power after his exile). The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book, an adventure story primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness. It centres around a man who is wrongfully imprisoned, escapes from jail, acquires a fortune, and sets about getting revenge on those responsible for his imprisonment. However, his plans have devastating consequences for the innocent as well as the guilty. In addition, it is a story that involves romance, loyalty, betrayal, and selfishness, shown throughout the story as characters slowly reveal their true inner nature. The book is considered a literary classic today. According to Luc Sante, "The Count of Monte Cristo has become a fixture of Western civilization's literature, as inescapable and immediately identifiable as Mickey Mouse, Noah's flood, and the story of Little Red Riding Hood."

An anthology of stories can be a fun thing or a scary one.
Deciding what goes into an anthology can be daunting. Too much romance and some folks may decide it is ‘too mushy’. Put too much humour in, and others will say, ‘there is no substance’. Go with more science fiction, or fantasy, or horror, and you will have some folks just not pick up the book.
Finding the perfect ‘mix’ is a challenge for sure.
‘Stories to Share with My Partner – Book 3’ presents what I hope is a good mix of stories and poetry to make everyone happy.
You have some love stories, ‘The Red Bug’ and the ‘The Coat’, for example, while science fiction is covered in ‘When the Future Arrives’ and ‘Coordinates’.
Funny stories are what I enjoy writing about, and there are few in this book.
‘So That Is When the Fight Started’ is something many can relate too and in ‘Jerk’ I take a different approach to ‘superheroes’.
I hope you enjoy reading these as much as I did when I wrote them.

Twelfth Night or What You Will is a slapstick, almost modern, romantic comedy concerning passion, romance, mistaken identities, and practical jokes. Viola has been separated from her twin brother Sebastian in a shipwreck off the shore of Illyria. Ashore, Viola disguises herself as a boy, calling herself Cesario, and becomes a servant to the Duke Orsino of Illyria. Thinking she/he is a boy, the Duke sends Viola to pursue the Countess Olivia on his behalf, but the Countess falls in love with Cesario! Things gets even more confusing when Sebastian finally turns up. This is chaos and comedy at its best. After all, it was written by the master himself, William Shakespeare.

A spotlight appears to light a large, ornate grandfather clock. The clock displays the correct time and is in perfect working order.

The actors sneak behind the audience and set the theatre on ?re.

    Exeunt.

Jonathan Ball’s Clock?re is a suite of poetic blueprints for imaginary plays that would be impossible to produce – plays in which, for example, the director burns out the sun, actors murder their audience or the laws of physics are de?led. The poems in a sense replace the need for drama, and are predicated on the idea that modern theatre lacks both ‘clocks’ and ‘?re’ and thus fails to offer its audiences immediate, violent engagement. They sometimes resemble the scores for Fluxus ‘happenings,’ but replace the casual aesthetic and DIY simplicity of Fluxus art with something more akin to the brutality of Artaud’s theatre of cruelty. Italo Calvino as rewritten by H. P. Lovecraft, Ball’s ‘plays’ break free of the constraints of reality and artistic category to revel in their own dazzling, magni?cent horror.

‘In these spare, nightmarish theatrescapes, Ball directs our ‘impossible dreams’ by blurring the script between actor and audience, the real and the staged, the lived and the dreamed, the self and the other ... At times reading more as horror-film treatments than prose poems(no doubt Ball’s intention), Clockfire finds its strength in irony.’ – Winnipeg Free Press

‘[Ball is] one of our most exciting young poets.’ – Robert Kroetsch, author of The Studhorse Man
