  The origins of the Byzantine Empire are deeply rooted in the legacy of the Roman Empire. As the Roman Empire grew increasingly difficult to manage due to its vast size, Emperor Diocletian initiated a division in the late 3rd century CE, separating the empire into Eastern and Western regions. This decision, though initially administrative, laid the groundwork for what would become two distinct political and cultural entities. While the Western Roman Empire succumbed to barbarian invasions and internal instability, the Eastern Roman Empire endured, evolving into what we now recognize as the Byzantine Empire. 
  One of the most pivotal moments in the birth of Byzantium came in 330 CE, when Emperor Constantine the Great established a new capital on the site of the ancient city of Byzantium. Renamed Constantinople, meaning "City of Constantine," it was strategically located on the Bosporus Strait, bridging Europe and Asia. This location was not only advantageous for trade but also easier to defend from invasions. Constantinople quickly rose to prominence as a center of politics, culture, and commerce, outshining Rome itself in influence and prestige. The city’s grandeur, with its towering walls and monumental architecture, symbolized the strength and ambition of the new Eastern Empire. 
  The early years of the Byzantine Empire were marked by both challenges and triumphs. While the Western Roman Empire fell in 476 CE, the Eastern Empire continued to thrive, preserving Roman laws, administrative systems, and military traditions. However, the Byzantines were not merely Roman in continuation—they adapted and transformed their identity over time. Greek became the dominant language, replacing Latin in most official and cultural contexts, and Orthodox Christianity emerged as a defining feature of Byzantine life.

  Today the Salem Witch Trials are often remembered as being a relic of a superstitious past, and Salem has transformed itself into a tourist haven and Halloween destination by capitalizing off the trials, which remain well known across America. However, most people have forgotten that New England had a “vampire” scare in the 19th century, when superstitious New Englanders looked to lore to explain tuberculosis, a devastating illness for which they had no available answers.  
  	The last and most famous event in New England’s hunt for vampires came near the end of the 19th century after Mercy Brown died of consumption on January 19, 1892 and her body was exhumed on March 17, 1892. Suspicion fell on her as being a possible vampire, and digging her coffin up was an attempt to determine if she was, in fact, a vampire. Her mother and sister had died before her, also from consumption, and when her brother Eddie caught the disease, he had dreams about Mercy. He also had the feeling of a heavy weight sitting on his chest at night. 
  	After her coffin was opened, the remains were examined, and the relatively good condition of Mercy Brown’s body indicated to her family and neighbors that she was indeed a vampire, and that she was responsible for her brother’s illness. While people who think of vampires today conjure up images of Dracula, in 19th century America, vampires were believed to be tied to tuberculosis, which killed millions of people. American beliefs about vampires connected victims who had died of consumption with living family members who came down with the disease, which was quite common because outbreaks of consumption frequently decimated whole families, striking down previously healthy brothers and sisters within a year or two.

  Liz McConaghy spent a total of seventeen years flying with the RAF’s Chinook Fleet. Aged just 21, she was the youngest aircrew member to deploy to Iraq and was also the only woman on the Chinook wing for four years. In her astounding career, Liz McConaghy completed two deployments to Iraq followed by ten deployments to Helmand province in Afghanistan in support of the enduring Operation Herrick campaign. 
   
  Liz’s inspiringly honest story reveals the highs and lows that she witnessed at war, and the cost that came with that both, physically and mentally for those involved. During her deployments, she survived not only a near fatal wire strike onboard her CH47, but numerous enemy fire ‘contacts’ defending her crew by returning fire from both the M134 ‘Minigun’ and M60 weapons entrusted to her to operate. 
   
  Her biggest honor of all her duties, however, was serving on the Medical Emergency Response Team, or MERT, flying ambulance as it was more commonly known. This involved recovering wounded soldiers from the battlefield, often under fire, and witnessing them both die and indeed come back to life at her feet in the cabin of her Chinook. 
   
  Liz saw Camp Bastion grow from a barbed wire fence surrounding an area of tents in the sand to the huge Operating Base it became. She was also on the last 1310 Flight deployment there as the British forces withdrew 10 years later handing it back to the Afghan National Army. 
   
  Very few Chinook crew members, if any, spanned the length of time deployed as Liz McConaghy did. This is a genuinely unique tale that only Liz could tell, which ends with her battling the memories that haunted her, long after she had left the battlefield. Her own war within took her to the point of suicide once she had left the service. Her survival from both the battles in foreign lands and in her own head led her to begin telling her story, in the hope she can help others win their wars.
