Sinossi

In 'Constantinople, painted by Warwick Goble, described by Alexander Van Millingen', the intricate tapestry of the once-great city is vividly brought to life through Goble's stunning illustrations accompanied by Van Millingen's eloquent prose. This book captures the essence of Constantinople, weaving together historical insights with rich descriptions that evoke the city's layered past. Van Millingen's writing style is both lyrical and informative, enabling readers to traverse the vivid landscapes and storied streets of a metropolis that straddles East and West. The work is part of a broader literary tradition that seeks to bridge art and literature, echoing the romanticized visions of the Byzantine Empire that captivated many in the early 20th century. Alexander Van Millingen was a prominent historian and scholar with deep roots in Byzantine studies. His academic background and personal engagement with the city's cultural heritage undoubtedly fueled his desire to pen this descriptive account. Having lived through the shifting tides of privilege and turmoil in the Ottoman Empire, Van Millingen was uniquely poised to reflect on the complexities of Constantinople, imbuing his narrative with both reverence and critique. This exquisite volume is highly recommended for lovers of art and history alike. It serves as a vital resource for scholars interested in Byzantium and captures the allure of Constantinople, making it an essential addition to any literary or historical collection. Readers will find themselves immersed in the enchanting scenes and stories that only a city of such profound legacy can offer.

The early 1930s were a tumultuous period for German politics, even in comparison to the ongoing transition to the modern era that caused various forms of chaos throughout the rest of the world. In the United States, reliance on the outdated gold standard and an absurdly parsimonious monetary policy helped bring about the Great Depression. Meanwhile, the Empire of Japan began its ultimately fatal adventurism with the invasion of Manchuria, alienating the rest of the world with the atrocities it committed. Around the same time, Gandhi began his drive for the peaceful independence of India through nonviolent protests against the British.
It was in Germany, however, that the strongest seeds of future tragedy were sown. The struggling Weimar Republic had become a breeding ground for extremist politics, including two opposed and powerful authoritarian entities: the right-wing National Socialists and the left-wing KPD Communist Party. As the 1930s dawned, these two totalitarian groups held one another in a temporary stalemate, enabling the fragile ghost of democracy to continue a largely illusory survival for a few more years.
That stalemate was broken in dramatic fashion on a bitterly cold night in late February 1933, and it was the Nazis who emerged decisively as the victors. A single act of arson against the famous Reichstag building proved to be the catalyst that propelled Adolf Hitler to victory in the elections of March 1933, which set the German nation irrevocably on the path towards World War II. That war would plunge much of the planet into an existential battle that ultimately cost an estimated 60 million lives.

People talk about “propaganda” all the time. Although the word seems to have negative connotations, whether it is good or bad depends entirely on the cause behind it and the correctness of the information it carries.
In Propaganda (1928), Edward Bernays explores the structure of systems that control the public mind and public opinion, and examines how propaganda affects all political and social practices. He explains how people are controlled by hidden governments that try to achieve public acceptance of certain concepts. Bernays also attempts to establish the role of intelligent propaganda in society.

The days of two genders—male, female; boy, girl; blue, pink—are over, if they ever existed at all. Gender is now a global conversation, and one that is constantly evolving. More people than ever before are openly living their lives as transgender men or women, and many transgender people are coming out as neither men nor women, instead living outside of the binary. Gender is changing, and this change is gaining momentum.

We all want to do and say the right things in relation to gender diversity—whether at a job interview, at parent/teacher night, and around the table at family dinners. But where do we begin?

From the differences among gender identity, gender expression, and sex, to the use of gender-neutral pronouns like singular they/them, to thinking about your own participation in gender, Gender: Your Guide serves as "a warm, inviting guide to a complicated area" (The Globe and Mail, Toronto). Professor and gender diversity advocate Lee Airton, PhD, explains how gender works in everyday life; how to use accurate terminology to refer to transgender, non-binary, and/or gender non-conforming individuals; and how to ask when you aren't sure what to do or say. It provides the information you need to talk confidently and compassionately about gender diversity, whether simply having a conversation or going to bat as an advocate.

The Dhammapada is the most widely read Buddhist scripture in existence, enjoyed by both Buddhists and non-Buddhists. This classic text of teaching verses from the earliest period of Buddhism in India conveys the philosophical and practical foundations of the Buddhist tradition.
The text presents two distinct goals for leading a spiritual life: the first is attaining happiness in this life (or in future lives); the second goal is the achievement of spiritual liberation, freedom, absolute peace.
Many of the key themes of the verses are presented in dichotomies or pairs, for example, grief and suffering versus joy; developing the mind instead of being negligent about one's mental attitude and conduct; virtuous action versus misconduct; and being truthful versus being deceitful. The purpose of these contrasts is, very simply, to describe the difference between what leads to desirable outcomes and what does not.
