Did you know that not all Romans could wear togas?
Movies and shows might depict Romans wearing togas and sandals everywhere they went, but that was actually not the case. In fact, togas were considered formal wear and a status symbol, as those in the higher social classes typically wore them.
There are many surviving writings authored by ancient Roman historians that describe the interesting traditions and customs of ancient Rome. These records provide detailed insights and scenes of the empire’s past. Some throw in a few myths, while some are infused with bias. Because of this, it can be difficult for curious listeners to distinguish between facts and opinions.
However, with this Enthralling History audiobook, you can easily discover the fascinating journey of the ancient Roman Empire, from the emergence of its first emperor until the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
Here’s just a tiny fraction of what you’ll discover:How Augustus ended the decades-long civil war and rose as the empire’s “first citizen”;How the emperor’s private military forces, the Praetorian Guard, became powerful enough to slay Rome’s mad emperor; The vicious scenes of Rome’s biggest entertainment shows: the gladiatorial games and chariot races; The unique and luxurious structures of Rome that have survived to this day;Harsh punishments and training of the legionnaires;Comparison between the lush life of the wealthy and the mundane lives of commoners, slaves, and freemen;Early Christians as Emperor Nero’s scapegoats and their terrible persecution; The rise of Christianity and the sacking of Rome; And much, much more!

From their founding, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) educated as many as 90 percent of Black college students in the United States. Although many are aware of the significance of HBCUs in expanding Black Americans' educational opportunities, much less attention has been paid to the vital role that they have played in expanding American democracy.

In The Power of Black Excellence, Deondra Rose provides an authoritative history of HBCUs and the unique role they have played in shaping American democracy since 1865. Drawing on over six years of deep research, Rose brings into view the historic impact that government support for HBCUs has had on the American political landscape, arguing that they have been essential for not only empowering Black citizens but also reshaping the distribution of political power in the United States. Today, HBCUs remain extremely important, as evidenced by the outsized number of black political leaders—including Kamala Harris—who attended them. Rose stresses that policymakers promote democracy itself when they support HBCUs and their unique approach to postsecondary education, which includes a commitment to helping students develop politically empowering skills, promoting political leadership, and fostering a commitment to service.

    Compromise has three colors.
The American church has a history of creating and maintaining racist ideas and practices. This audio original recording from NYT bestselling author Jemar Tisby is based on the themes introduced in The Color of Compromise but goes a step further, showing how compromise has three distinct colors: green, white, and red. Green represents the greed than accompanies support of racism. It is white, representing the white supremacy that views white people as inherently superior to other skin colors. And it is red, representing the blood that has been spilled--and continues to be shed--to fight against racism. Tisby offers a powerful challenge to avoid complicity with racism by taking a bold stand for racial justice, starting today.

The bloodiest day in American history took place on the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution. On September 17, 1862, Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia fought George McClellan’s Union Army of the Potomac outside Sharpsburg along Antietam Creek. That day, nearly 25,000 would become casualties, and Lee’s army would barely survive fighting the much bigger Northern army. Although the battle was tactically a draw, it resulted in forcing Lee’s army out of Maryland and back into Virginia, making it a strategic victory for the North and an opportune time for President Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves in the rebellious states. For those reasons, Antietam is remembered as one of the major turning points of the Civil War, even as it is often overlooked that the bloody battle only represented the climactic culmination of a 3 week campaign that saw George McClellan cautiously pull a fragmented Union army together and begin tracking Lee’s army into Maryland.
Without question, the most famous battle of the American Civil War took place outside of the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, which happened to be a transportation hub, serving as the center of a wheel with several roads leading out to other Pennsylvanian towns. From July 1-3, Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia tried everything in its power to decisively defeat George Meade’s Union Army of the Potomac, unleashing ferocious assaults that inflicted nearly 50,000 casualties in all. Day 1 of the battle would have been one of the 25 biggest battles of the Civil War itself, and it ended with a tactical Confederate victory. But over the next two days, Lee would try and fail to dislodge the Union army with attacks on both of its flanks during the second day and Pickett’s Charge on the third and final day.
