‘The End of the World is Nigh’ has been seen, heard and quoted ad infinitum all of our lives. In the comfort zone of our own arrogance and the resources that we humans have at our disposal it seems we are both inviolable and invincible. All is safe. We are in control.

But Nature has a way of sending earthquakes, eruptions, fires and flood, and much else besides, at the most inopportune times and, in these more modern days, with increasing frequency and extremes.

In this volume our classic authors conjure up all sorts of damnations and destructions in literary assaults testing our will to survive and our ingenuity to overcome situations where the outlook is bleak at best and the total extinction of us at worse.

The national bestselling authors of violent, bullet-riddled Old West yarns return to the Texas frontier town where Sheriff Buck Jackson and Deputy Flint Moran are quickly learning that enforcing the law means being fastest on the draw—or being killed by someone quicker . . .

Welcome to Tinhorn, Texas. Now go home.

Two drifters, flush with cash and looking to buy cattle, arrive in town—one nursing a bullet wound he claims he received accidentally when his friend was cleaning his gun. Jackson and Moran are suspicious but have no reason to challenge their story—until four more drifters show up looking for the first two. Moran may not be lightning quick when it comes to numbers, but reports say the Wells Fargo office was held up by six men . . .

But Moran is going to need more bullets. He's been called upon to go after Abel Crowe and his three sons on a murder and kidnapping charge. And with Jesse Slocum breaking out of prison to wreak vengeance on Sheriff Jackson, who killed Slocum's brother, the young deputy is going to make his name one bullet at a time—or die trying . . .

A brave Malay chieftain suffers from a surprising vulnerability. After giving birth to a series of unfortunate children, a farmer's wife is determined to bear no more. A spoonful of sugar brings a neophyte ivory trader to a moment of Nietzschean self-realisation. A pompous ass discovers that his wife has run off with another man. Secluded in an eerie lagoon, a Malay carries a guilty secret in his heart. "Tales of Unrest" was the first volume of short fiction Joseph Conrad published in his own lifetime. While some of these tales evoke the settings of Conrad's earliest novels, others clearly anticipate elements of Conrad's subsequent masterworks "Heart of Darkness" and "The Secret Agent".
