Sinossi

Hourlyshines a spotlight on the often-overlooked majority of the US workforce: The Hourly employees who keep our economy running yet feel invisible.Businesses don’t just need A-players at their corporate offices; they need them on the front lines, interacting with customers and representing their brand. However, those who occupy these types of positions don’t often get the respect they deserve. In Hourly, author AJ Richichi shares eye-opening insights into the challenges these “invisible” workers face on a daily basis as a result of large-scale issues that have gone unaddressed for years. Through research and firsthand experience, Richichi discusses why it seems so difficult to find solutions but shows that change is possible, providing practical ways for companies to support their hourly workers. The book includes real-world examples of brands successfully empowering hourly staff through measures like stock grants, tuition support, and workplace perks. Readers can review these perks and resulting impacts to drive change within their own organization.Hourly proves that we can achieve a brighter future for employers, workers, and the economy as a whole. However, we must first open our eyes to “see” the invisible workers and understand how important they truly are in society.

On October 7, 1777, Benedict Arnold rode out against orders and led an American assault against British forces led by General John Burgoyne in one of the climactic battles and ultimate turning point of the war at Saratoga. Near the end of the most important American victory of the Revolution, Arnold’s leg was shattered by a volley that also hit his horse, which fell on the leg as well. Arnold would later remark that he wish the shot had hit him in the chest. If it had, Benedict Arnold would be remembered as one of America’s greatest war heroes, and probably second only to George Washington among the generals of the Revolution.
Today, of course, all of that has been overshadowed by Arnold’s treacherous plot to turn over West Point to the British in 1780. The infamous plot came about while Arnold convalesced as the military governor in Philadelphia, where he met and married the Tory-affiliated Peggy Shippen. Arnold grew more concerned about the patriot cause, and combined with the perceived insults, exposure to Loyalist leanings, and another Congressional rebuke for living extravagantly in Philadelphia, Arnold decided to secretly offer his services to the British.
Spying and treachery are as much a part of warfare as weapons and death. This has always been the case since the earliest battles and is not likely to change in the future. And yet, even within this irregular system, there are certain rules, especially in past eras such as the American Revolution. First, while spying on behalf of one’s country is perfectly respectable, betraying one’s nation is treason. Second, honorable men do not involve those too innocent to understand the consequences of their actions in their schemes. Third, no man wearing his own uniform can be considered a spy, for his garments make it clear who he is and preclude deception. All three of these rules played into the story of Major John André.

    Are We Bodies or Souls?

What are humans? What makes us who we are?

Many think that we are just complicated machines, or animals that are different from machines only by being conscious. In Are We Bodies or Souls? Richard Swinburne comes to the defense of the soul and presents new philosophical arguments that are supported by modern neuroscience. When scientific advances enable neuroscientists to transplant a part of brain into a new body, he reasons, no matter how much we can find out about their brain activity or conscious experiences we will never know whether the resulting person is the same as before or somebody entirely new. Swinburne thus argues that we are immaterial souls sustained in existence by our brains. Sensations, thoughts, and intentions are conscious events in our souls that cause events in our brains. While scientists might discover some of the laws of nature that determine conscious events and brain events, each person's soul is an individual thing and this is what ultimately makes us who we are.

"Rhythm of Resistance: The Soulful Echoes of Black Musicians in the Era of Martin Luther King Jr. (1957-1968)" is a must-read book that sheds light on the pivotal role of music in the Civil Rights Movement. It provides a comprehensive overview of the social, political, and cultural context of the era, highlighting how music served as a powerful tool for expressing the aspirations and frustrations of African Americans. Through songs such as "We Shall Overcome" and "A Change Is Gonna Come," music became an anthem of the movement, inspiring activists and mobilizing communities across America and beyond, it also highlights the struggles of people of color in the United Kingdom at this time. This book is a testament to the enduring spirit of resistance and resilience that drives us towards a more just and equitable society. It serves as a reminder that the struggle for racial justice is ongoing, and the power of music to inspire social change remains as relevant today as it was during the Civil Rights era. Get ready to be inspired and motivated by the transformative power of music in the fight for civil rights.
