Sinossi

"Paper Production" delivers a thorough exploration of paper manufacturing, bridging traditional techniques with modern sustainable practices. This comprehensive guide examines the entire production cycle, from forest management and fiber selection to finished products, while addressing crucial environmental considerations. The book uniquely integrates technical expertise with practical sustainability solutions, making complex industrial processes accessible to both industry professionals and students. The text progresses logically through three main sections: raw material preparation, manufacturing processes, and environmental impact.Readers learn how different wood species affect paper quality, explore various pulping methods, and discover how alternative materials like bamboo are transforming the industry. The book details fascinating technical aspects, such as the chemistry of fiber processing and the physics of paper formation, while maintaining a clear focus on practical applications and real-world case studies from global manufacturers. What sets this book apart is its balanced approach to addressing contemporary challenges in paper production. While explaining traditional manufacturing methods, it emphasizes innovative solutions for reducing water consumption, implementing closed-loop systems, and advancing sustainable practices. The content connects multiple disciplines, from chemical engineering to environmental science, providing readers with a holistic understanding of how paper production influences global trade and environmental policies, all while maintaining an accessible writing style that makes complex concepts digestible for a broad audience.

    The Architecture of Discipline -...

In the era of the intelligent cloud, architecture must do more than enable systems; it must verify them. The Architecture of Discipline defines how modern enterprises design environments capable of demonstrating their own integrity—continuously and at scale. Drawing on extensive leadership experience in cloud security, Zero Trust, governance, and AI oversight, Lori Higham redefines architecture as a discipline of structure and accountability, where evidence emerges as the natural outcome of design rather than the afterthought of audit.
This work moves fluidly between theory and reflection, rhetoric and practice. It invites the reader to question assumptions about control, trust, and automation while offering concrete mechanisms for building systems that remain accurate, accountable, and adaptive as they evolve. Here, architecture becomes both a technical craft and a philosophical inquiry: a dialogue between what is built and what can be proven.
Across chapters on governance, Zero Trust, responsible AI, and assurance, The Architecture of Discipline demonstrates how design becomes verification: how standards translate into automation, ethics into operational boundary, and continuity into measurable assurance. Each section balances rigorous conceptual framing with tangible architectural patterns, reinforcing that discipline in design is both method and mindset.
More than a manual, this is a conversation with the reader—a call to architects, engineers, and decision-makers to examine not only what they build, but how they sustain fidelity between design and outcome. In intelligent environments, integrity is not assumed; it is demonstrated through evidence. The measure of architecture is its capacity to sustain integrity through change—to analyze, constrain, and reveal the systems it governs faster than risk can erode them.

The ocean is filled with scientific discoveries—and God’s presence. For marine biologist Rachel Jordan, both science and Scripture are means of knowing creation and Creator. In If the Ocean Has a Soul, Rachel considers the natural world through a spiritual lens, meshing marine biology with biblical truths in a keen and current take on faith and science. With engaging storytelling and deep knowledge of the Bible, she asks and answers questions like: How can Christians reconcile religion and science when the two seem opposed? What do suffering and death teach us about the character of Jesus? How do we care for the environment when there seems to be little hope for repair? What do the ocean and its sea creatures, specifically, reveal about God? In these chapters, Rachel recounts fascinating aquatic phenomena alongside the sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic stories of animals she has known. You’ll lose yourself in the shadows of an underwater labyrinth; hear spiritual wisdom from a great-grandmother coral the size of a Volkswagen Beetle; and fall in love with Porky, the pudgy porcupinefish greeting visitors at the Windjammer shipwreck. And along the way, you’ll see how the promise of restoration unfolds in both physical and spiritual ways. Rachel’s thoughtful scientific and theological insights encourage us to know the Creator of the sea and everything in it.

What if we could love the planet as much as we love one another?

"Warm, wise, and overflowing with generosity, this is a love story so epic it embraces all of creation. Yet another reminder of how blessed we are to be in the struggle with elders like David and Tara.” – Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis

What You Won’t Do for Love is an inspiring conversation about love and the environment. When artist Miriam Fernandes approaches the legendary eco-pioneer David Suzuki to create a theatre piece about climate change, she expects to write about David’s perspective as a scientist. Instead, she discovers the boundless vision and efforts of Tara Cullis, a literature scholar, climate organizer, and David’s life partner. Miriam realizes that David and Tara’s decades-long love for each other, and for family and friends, has only clarified and strengthened their resolve to fight for the planet.

What You Won’t Do for Love transforms real-life conversations between David, Tara, Miriam, and her husband Sturla into a charmingly novel and poetic work. Over one idyllic day in British Columbia, Miriam and Sturla take in a lifetime of David and Tara’s adventures, inspiration, and love, and in turn reflect on their own relationships to each other and the planet. Revealing David Suzuki and Tara Cullis in an affable, conversational, and often comedic light, What You Won’t Do For Love asks if we can love our planet the same way we love one another.

    The Book Of Earths

This is a compendium of theories of the shape of the Earth, along with a great deal of 'Earth Mystery' lore. Richly illustrated, the Book of Earths includes many unusual theories, including Columbus' idea that the Earth is literally pear-shaped, modern theories that the Earth was originally tetrahedral, and so on. Kenton also covers many traditional theories including the ancient Babylonians and Egyptians, Hindu and Buddhist cosmology, and those of the Peruvians, Aztecs and Mongols. She also discusses modern alternative theories such as that of Reed and Koresh. Strangely enough, she misses or ignores the modern flat earth theory of Rowbotham. This is the only apparent omission in this definitive study. Kenton has no apparent axe to grind: this is simply a very readable survey of the literature if you have any interest in 'Earth mysteries"

Beginning with a jaw-dropping rumination on a centuries-old painting featuring a white man with a Black man's leg surgically attached (with the expired Black leg-donor in the foreground), contracts law scholar and celebrated journalist Patricia J. Williams uses the lens of the law to take on core questions of identity, ethics, and race.

With her trademark elegant prose and critical legal studies wisdom, Williams brings to bear a keen analytic eye and a lawyer's training to chapters exploring the ways we have legislated the ownership of everything from body parts to gene sequences—and the particular ways in which our laws in these areas isolate nonnormative looks, minority cultures, and out-of-the-box thinkers.

At the heart of "Wrongful Birth" is a lawsuit in which a white couple who use a sperm bank sue when their child "comes out Black." And "Hot Cheeto Girl" examines the way that algorithms give rise to new predictive categories of human assortment, layered with market-inflected cages of assigned destiny.

The Miracle of the Black Leg offers a brilliant meditation on the tricky place where law, science, ethics, and cultural slippage collide.
