This volume offers a rigorous and interdisciplinary exploration of how the European Union's externalization of migration governance has reshaped territorial, political, and human landscapes at its periphery. Tracing the aftermath of the 2015 migration crisis, the volume examines how informal agreements with Turkey, Libya, Tunisia, and Albania initiated a cascading logic that normalizes legal opacity, erodes accountability, and institutionalizes human rights violations. Moving beyond legal and geopolitical critique, the book investigates the entanglement of migration containment with tourism development in border regions such as Lampedusa and Lesvos, exposing how these territories become doubly burdened as sites of both securitization and commodification. By engaging with law, postcolonial theory, and critical tourism studies, the authors reveal the neo-colonial dynamics underlying EU mobility governance and advance alternative models grounded in accountability, territorial justice, and the defense of fundamental rights.

Narrated by the author: Experience the Southern California wildfires through Jacob Soboroff’s eyes—and voice. New York Times Bestseller and #1 Los Angeles Times Bestseller
A "gripping, unshakeable firsthand account" (San Francisco Chronicle) of the firestorm that consumed Los Angeles, from the MS NOW reporter and New York Times bestselling author of Separated, who covered the fires on the ground as an LA native. "Read[s] like a sci-fi thriller.” —Los Angeles Times
On the morning of January 7, 2025, a message pinged the phone of Jacob Soboroff, a national reporter for MS NOW. “Big Palisades fire. We are evacuating,” his brother texted within minutes of the blaze engulfing the hillside behind the home where he and his pregnant wife were living. “Really bad.” An attached photo showed a huge black plume rising from behind the house, an umbrella of smoke towering over everything they owned. Jacob rushed to the office of the bureau chief.
“I should go. I grew up in the Palisades.”
Soon he was on the front line of the blaze—his first live report of what would turn out to be weeks covering unimaginable destruction, from both the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire, in Altadena. In the days to come, Soboroff appeared across the networks of NBC News as Los Angeles was ablaze, met with displaced residents and workers, and pressed Governor Gavin Newsom in an interview on Meet the Press. But no story Soboroff has covered at home or abroad—the trauma of family separation at the border, the displacement of the war in Ukraine, the collapse of order in Haiti—could have prepared him for reporting live as the hallmarks of his childhood were engulfed in flames around him while his hometown burned to the ground.
But for Soboroff, questions remained after the fires were controlled: what had he just witnessed? How could it have happened? Is it inevitable something like it will happen again? This set Soboroff off on months of reporting—with firefighters, fire victims, political leaders, academics, earth scientists, wildlife biologists, meteorologists and more—that made him keenly aware of how the misfortune of seeing his past carbonize was also a form of time travel into the dystopian world his children will inhabit. This is because the 2025 LA fires were not an isolated tragedy, but rather they are a harbinger—"the fire of the future," in the words of one senior emergency—management official.
Firestorm is the story of the costliest wildfire in American history, the people it affected and the deeply personal connection to one journalist covering it. It is a love letter to Los Angeles, a yearning to understand the fires, and why America’s new age of disaster we are living through portends that—without a reckoning of how Los Angeles burned—there is more yet, and worse, to come.

The vast history of Britain is now at your fingertips!
Britain has a long history, from the days of Roman settlements, such as Londinium (modern-day London), to the days of Britain ruling the waves to the subsequent decline of the empire and the rise of the Commonwealth. It is hard to cover the entire history of Britain in just one book. However, this text seeks to break its history down into easily digestible sections.
This book starts us off at the point at which Britain entered into the historical record. Follow along as we unveil the invasion of Julius Caesar and the conquests of later Romans. These were the first people to write down their thoughts and feelings about Britain’s inhabitants.
The Roman Empire itself would eventually crash, but Hadrian’s Wall, as well as a multitude of Roman settlements, would remain. These were inherited by the Anglo-Saxons, who arrived from the German-speaking lands just across the English Chanel. The Anglo-Saxons created a rich history and culture but would be supplanted by the Normans in 1066.
The Tudor dynasty emerged in 1485, fundamentally changing life in Britain. The most notorious Tudor of all, King Henry VIII, broke free from Roman Catholicism and instituted the Church of England with himself at its head.
Here is just a peek at what you will learn:The rise of Anglo-Saxon rule and the establishment of EnglandWilliam the Conqueror and how he changed the course of British historyHenry VIII and the Protestant ReformationThe many conflicts between England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern IrelandThe legacy of Wales and Welsh cultureScotland’s role in British affairsBritain’s involvement in World War One and World War TwoFamous myths and legends of the British Isles

A Southern white writer, educator, and activist, Lillian Smith (1897–1966) spoke out all her life against injustice. In Killers of the Dream, her most influential book, she draws on memories of her childhood to describe the psychological and moral cost of the powerful, contradictory rules about sin, sex, and segregation—the intricate system of taboos—that undergirded Southern society.

Published to wide controversy, it became the source (acknowledged or unacknowledged) of much of our thinking about race relations and was for many a catalyst for the civil rights movement. It remains the most courageous, insightful, and eloquent critique of the pre-1960s South.

"I began to see racism and its rituals of segregation as a symptom of a grave illness," Smith wrote. "When people think more of their skin color than of their souls, something has happened to them." Today, listeners are rediscovering in Smith's writings a forceful analysis of the dynamics of racism, as well as her prophetic understanding of the connections between racial and sexual oppression.

Philosophy of Race - A Primer

It was not until the early 1900s that the idea emerged of a philosophy dealing specifically with issues of race. Unsurprisingly, the philosophy of race was begun by people of color. Philosophy considers race in terms of its social construction, and it analyzes the cultural and moral effects of attitudes toward race. The philosophy of race deals with how ideas and attitudes about race developed and seeks to understand race relations in the context of social and moral philosophy. The critical philosophy of race analyzes and critiques racism, systemic racial hierarchies, and the ways that the racialization of society effects ideas, values, practices, and social institutions.
Similar to feminist philosophy and its focus on gender constructs, critical philosophy of race has a focus on the role of racism and racial hierarchies in shaping the historical patterns of thought and society. Critical philosophers of race acknowledge the ways in which white-dominated social traditions have excluded people of color, and critical philosophy of race is an attempt to decode often veiled words and ideas that power racial hierarchies and attitudes with an eye toward changing those traditions and decreasing racial injustices. It is also critical in calling for an end to the denial of society’s past and ongoing racism, including an end to racial segregation, exploitation, and genocide. Being philosophers, critical philosophers of race are especially critical of philosophy’s denial of its own racial past.
