This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
Understand why modern life feels increasingly dysfunctional despite unprecedented material abundance and technological capability that should produce flourishing rather than despair. This diagnostic audiobook examines the structural, cultural, and psychological factors creating widespread alienation, anxiety, and social breakdown that individuals experience but rarely understand systematically. Learn how economic transformations, community collapse, meaning erosion, and institutional failure combine to generate the pervasive sense that something fundamental is wrong. The narrator presents research documenting rising loneliness, declining trust, increasing mental illness, and deteriorating social bonds that statistics confirm but establishment narratives deny. Discover how changes in work, family structure, religious participation, and civic engagement removed supports human psychology evolved to require while offering no adequate replacements. Understand why technological connection fails to satisfy needs for genuine community and how social media intensifies isolation while appearing to reduce it. This audiobook identifies specific mechanisms producing social breakdown rather than offering vague cultural complaints or simple political explanations. Learn what sociologists, psychologists, and historians understand about why this moment feels uniquely difficult and what these insights suggest about possible responses. Perfect for anyone sensing that society has fundamentally malfunctioned and seeking frameworks for understanding systemic dysfunction beyond individual pathology or partisan narratives.

"That government is best which governs least" is the famous opening line of this essay. The slavery crisis inflamed New England in the 1840s and 1850s. The environment became especially tense after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. A lifelong abolitionist, Thoreau delivered an impassioned speech which would later become Civil Disobedience in 1848, just months after leaving Walden Pond. The speech dealt with slavery, but at the same time excoriated American imperialism, particularly the Mexican–American War. Thoreau asserts that because governments are typically more harmful than helpful, they therefore cannot be justified. Democracy is no cure for this, as majorities simply by virtue of being majorities do not also gain the virtues of wisdom and justice. The judgment of an individual's conscience is not necessarily inferior to the decisions of a political body or majority, and so "[i]t is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. The only obligation which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think right.... Law never made men a whit more just; and, by means of their respect for it, even the well-disposed are daily made the agents of injustice." He adds, "I cannot for an instant recognize as my government [that] which is the slave's government also.

From MS NOW legal analyst and veteran federal prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, an urgent summons to tackle the scourge of political lies in America—and prevent a figure like Donald Trump from ever rising again. “The 2020 election was a total FRAUD!” “I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.” “There is NO WAY Biden got 80,000,000 votes!!!” These and other lies by Donald Trump sparked a historic insurrection to topple our democracy and undermined the public’s faith in elections. The Trump administration’s deceit has enabled the use of law enforcement and the military against the people, the unlawful deportation of immigrants, and the disregard of international rules meant to promote a civilized and peaceful world. Other politicians, inspired by the success of the political lie, have flooded the public square with falsehoods of their own.   As Andrew Weissmann reveals, our vulnerability to politicians’ lies stems from a flaw in America’s legal system—one that can be fixed. But it will take courage, creativity, and a willingness to look beyond our borders to other countries that have already confronted this crisis. A slim, elegant treatise, Liar’s Kingdom is a playbook for stopping politicians like Trump from holding office in the future—and for saving our democracy. We are entitled to more from our government, and Weissmann shows us how we can get it.

In "Critique of Interventionism," Ludwig von Mises delves into the economic consequences and philosophical underpinnings of government intervention in the market. Mises argues that interventionism, which involves state interference in economic affairs while maintaining private ownership, inevitably leads to unintended consequences, distortions, and economic inefficiencies. The book is a critical analysis of interventionist policies, examining their impact on individual freedom, economic coordination, and the overall functioning of a market economy.
