  Possibly the most important man of antiquity, and even all of history, was Julius Caesar. The ultimate conqueror, statesman, dictator, visionary, and opportunist, during his time in power Caesar expanded the borders of Rome to almost twice their previous size, revolutionized the infrastructure of the Roman state, and destroyed the Roman Republic for good, leaving a line of emperors in its place. His legacy is so strong that his name has become, in many languages, synonymous with power. 
  	During one of the most turbulent periods in the history of Rome, men like Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, and Octavian participated in two civil wars that would spell the end of the Roman Republic and determine who would become the Roman emperor. In the middle of it all was history’s most famous woman, the Egyptian pharaoh Cleopatra, who famously seduced both Caesar and Antony and thereby positioned herself as one of the most influential people in a world of powerful men. Cleopatra was a legendary figure even to contemporary Romans and the ancient world, and she was a controversial figure who was equally reviled and praised through the years, depicted as a benevolent ruler and an evil seductress.  
  Octavian was the first true Roman Emperor, and the first man since the Tarquinus, five centuries earlier, to establish a successful hereditary ruling dynasty in what had been a proud Republic for over half a millennium. He was a canny strategist, an excellent orator, a fine writer, a generous patron of the arts and enthusiastic promoter of public works, but above all he was a master politician.

  Social justice has always remained a preoccupation and concern, and even a passion, in the very mental make-up of the Tamil people. The history of Tamil down the ages shows that the socially oppressed and their rights to religious observances have always been upheld. The Tamils were therefore particularly impressed by the principles of Karl Marx. While upholding economic justice, the Tamils also asserted social justice. The emphasis of social justice shifted from a demand for religious rights to a demand for the right to education and social equality. At the same time the European Rationality also influenced the Tamil stock. So it was like a confluence of new sentiments, ideas, rationality and agnosticism that led to institutionalized ideological movements during the 19th and 20th centuries that characterized the tenor of the Tamil thought stream, politics, religion, social structure, empowerment and a revaluation of the traditional. Such institutionalization was best realized by the Dravidian Movement led by EV Ramasamy Naicker, reverently called Periyar. Periyar lived a long life and through and through he had been vociferous and influential. His writings and speeches run to thousands of pages. A few selected speeches and articles, which however are too little to represent the multifarious issues that Periyar addressed, have been presented in this audio book. The selection eliminates a couple of issues because certain causes that made Periyar address those issues no more exist in the Tamil society of the 20th and 21st centuries. The selected speeches and articles are from his corpus on the following issues.

  Father Charles Coughlin was a controversial Canadian-American Catholic priest based in Michigan. Calling for monetary reforms, the nationalization of major industries and railroads, and protection of the rights of labor, Coughlin used weekly radio broadcasts to reach a mass audience of up to thirty million listeners during the 1930s. 
   An early supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal, Coughlin later became a harsh critic. Coughlin’s commentary also became more anti-semitic, and he supported some of the fascist policies of Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito. As a result, many American Catholic leaders, as well as the Vatican, wanted Coughlin silenced. After the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the Roosevelt administration finally forced the cancellation of his radio program and forbade the dissemination of his newspaper, Social Justice.
