Sinossi

Winnie-the-Pooh is a treasured classic of children's literature. This collection includes some of the most famous and beloved stories that follow the adventures of the beloved teddy bear, Winnie-the-Pooh, and his friends Christopher Robin, Piglet, Eeyore, Owl, Rabbit, Kanga, and Roo. The books starts whit the story of Winnie-the-Pooh trying to climb a tree to get some honey, but falls off, bouncing on branches on his way down. He meets with his friend Christopher Robin and floats up with a balloon of Christopher's, only to discover they are not the right sort of bees for honey. Christopher then shoots the balloon with his gun, letting Pooh slowly float back down. When Pooh visits Rabbit, he eats so much while in Rabbit's house that he gets stuck in Rabbit's door on the way out. Christopher Robin reads him a book for a week and, having not had any meals, Pooh is slim enough to be pulled out by Christopher, Rabbit, and Rabbit's friends and extended family.

The series dedicated to the immigrant experience in modern America starts off with a moving novel of one family’s struggles in Haiti and New York.

It is election time in Haiti, and bombs are going off in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. During a visit from her home in rural Haiti, Celiane Espérance and her mother are nearly killed. Looking at her country with new eyes, Celiane gains a fresh resolve to be reunited with her father in Brooklyn, New York. The harsh winter and concrete landscape of her new home are a shock to Celiane, who witnesses her parents’ struggle to earn a living, her brother’s uneasy adjustment to American society, and her own encounters with learning difficulties and school violence.

“The excellence of the writing and the resilient outlook of both first-person fictions set a high standard for this series.” —The Horn Book

“The author captures the color and texture of Haitian life as well as the heroine’s adjustment to New York. While readers may want to hear more about her experiences in Brooklyn, they will appreciate the truthfulness of the family’s struggle to reconnect.” —Publishers Weekly

The greatest social reformer of her time! Pres. Franklin Roosevelt called Lillian Wald “one of the least known yet most important people” of her time. Wald, a relentless advocate for the welfare of children, was responsible for many of the social and health-related programs we take for granted today. She campaigned for school lunches and nurses in public schools, founded the Henry Street Settlement, and was an early promoter of women’s suffrage. Wald was adept at navigating both the poorest, most densely populated neighborhoods, as well as the upper circles of society, where she sought donors to support her efforts. Paul Kaplan’s extensive research into the history of New York brought him to this fascinating subject. Through his revealing profile of Lillian Wald, Kaplan deftly illustrates how far we’ve come as a society, how much work it took to get here, and how much more work there is still to be done.
