William Beckford
William Beckford (1760-1844) was an English novelist, collector and builder born in London, heir at ten to a vast Jamaican sugar fortune. Driven abroad by scandal, he built the enormous Gothic folly of Fonthill Abbey, whose tower collapsed twice, and assembled one of the great private libraries. His works include Vathek and Dreams, Waking Thoughts and Incidents.
