Karl Schaper
Karl Schaper was born in Germany in 1931. As a child, he was required to join the Hitler Youth, although instead of serving in the war, he apprenticed as a diesel mechanic. His friendship with an American GI led to an invitation overseas, where Schaper worked on an Iowa farm and met his future wife. He now lives along the Shell Rock River.
