Summary

How did the great men and women who changed the world actually do it?  Were they simply smarter and more talented than the rest of us?  What was their secret? The accomplishments of the great are widely known, but their many battles with adversity, frequent setbacks and defeats, and the personal and professional hardships they endured along the way and ultimately drew strength from the dark underside of achievement that is seldom illuminated. This book examines ten historic figures--from the world of sports and popular culture to literature, business, science, statecraft, and social outreach--and highlights how they left their legendary mark on the world. Their recipes for success were many and varied, but all had one key ingredient in common: that life-changing mix of passion and perseverance popularly known as grit.

Linda Olson and her husband, Dave Hodgens, were young doctors whose story had all the makings of a fairy tale. But then, while they were vacationing in Germany, a train hit their van, shattering their lives—and Linda's body. When Linda saw Dave for the first time after losing her right arm and both of her legs, she told him she would understand if he left. His response: "I didn't marry your arms or your legs. If you can do it, I can do it."In order to protect their loved ones, they decided to hide the truth about what really happened on those train tracks, and they kept their secret for thirty-five years. As a triple amputee, Linda learned to walk with prostheses and change diapers and insert IVs with one hand. She finished her residency while pregnant and living on her own. And she and Dave went on to pursue their dream careers, raise two children, and travel the world.Inspiring and deeply moving, Gone asks listeners to find not only courage but also laughter in the unexpected challenges we all face. The day of the accident, no one envied Linda and Dave. Today, many do.

The story of how the author’s life with bowel cancer first began, after the diagnosis and operation, how he coped with many years of pain due to abdominal adhesions plus the twisted colon at a later stage, how he overcame it and eventually beat it altogether and became pain free. It is also a reminder to cancer survivors and sufferers that at any stage of cancer and in whatever pain they are in, they must not give in to it or become negative or pessimistic. It brings hope, positivity, encouragement, confidence, inspiration and optimism to all who are struggling to cope with cancer and the aftereffects. The author also explains how big the difference in being alive, living and having his life saved is compared to not having his life saved and being dead. The excitement of the author has been there right from the beginning because to him it is a miracle. This is also education as well and may help people when reacting to an initial diagnosis, how to exercise while in pain, how not to eat and drink certain things when given advice by a professional and how to adapt to living while in pain. It also says that anyone affected by cancer should be strong-willed, believe in themselves and try as hard as possible to find a solution when they are going through hard times. It may also be of a big help to medical professionals plus anyone studying cancer and similar related conditions.

“Full of interesting and entertaining accounts . . . presents an authentic picture of overseas life in the Kipper Fleet during that period.” —RAF Historical Society Journal    After World War II, the Royal Air Force went through a considerable downsizing but retained an essential maritime reconnaissance role for the protection of British interests overseas. These areas were primarily the Mediterranean, Middle East, Far East to Hong Kong and all associated trade routes linking them to Britain and each other. With the arrival in service of the Shackleton from 1951, re-equipment with the new type initially concentrated on the home fleet of Coastal Command. The first overseas station to get them was Gibraltar in 1952, followed by Malta, Singapore, Aden and finally Sharjah. In addition to their daily routine of maritime patrols, the overseas squadrons took part in a number of significant operations. From dealing with rebellion in Aden, Rhodesia’s Unilateral Declaration of Independence to the Indonesian Confrontation, the Shackleton played a vital peacekeeping role. There was even a permanent detachment on the island of Gan for search-and-rescue cover for aircraft transiting to and from the Far East.   The last overseas RAF Shackletons were based at Sharjah until late 1971, with a detachment from the UK remaining in Singapore until 1972. The survivors were finally withdrawn from use in November 1984. Thus, after almost thirty-three years the Shackleton’s overseas story was essentially over. Following the outstanding success of Volume One, published in 2018 and still available, Steve Bond has garnered another exceptional group of Shack operators who delight in giving the reader their tales of derring-do. Another one for the Boys’ kitbag!
