The Cairngorm mountains in Scotland are a magnet for climbers and walkers. John Allen spent more than thirty years in the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team saving the lost and injured. This special anniversary edition of his story includes new chapters discussing how mountain rescue has developed over the last decade.“The twisting mix of sadness and wit are blended together with perfection” MOUNTAIN RESCUE MAGAZINE`A fascinating account of a man of great humility and remarkable courage.' Annie Brown, The Daily Record `Makes Touching the Void seem like a pretty routine day on the hill. ‘Iain Macwhirter, The Sunday Herald `Cairngorm John is a remarkable piece of work: succinct, moving, compassionate, gripping, technically detailed and yet broad enough in its appeal to hold the attention of general audiences'-Rennie MacOwen, The Scots Magazine`Cairngorm John portrays the human side of mountain rescue, clearly demonstrating the emotional roller coaster that's involved, as well as the camaraderie that exists within teams like Cairngorm Mountain Rescue. I wish every 'do-gooder' who insists on full-time professional mountain rescue teams would read the book and recognise that the main ingredients for a mountain rescuer are commitment, concern and enthusiasm. John Allen has all these in abundance. He also tells a very good story.' Cameron McNeish, TGO Magazine‘It's as much about love of the mountains as their dangers.' LIBBY PURVES

“It seemed as if Theodore Roosevelt’s biographers had closed the book on his life story. But Ryan Swanson has uncovered an untold chapter” (Johnny Smith, coauthor of Blood Brothers: The Fatal Friendship between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X).   Crippling asthma, a frail build, and grossly myopic eyesight: these were the ailments that plagued Teddy Roosevelt as a child. In adulthood, he was diagnosed with a potentially fatal heart condition and was told never to exert himself again. Roosevelt’s body was his weakness, the one hill he could never fully conquer—and as a result he developed what would become a lifelong obsession with athletics that he carried with him into his presidency.   As President of the United States, Roosevelt boxed, practiced Ju-Jitsu, played tennis nearly every day, and frequently invited athletes and teams to the White House. It was during his administration that America saw baseball’s first ever World Series; interscholastic sports began; and schools began to place an emphasis on physical education. In addition, the NCAA formed, and the United States hosted the Olympic Games for the first time.   From a prize-winning historian, this book shows how Roosevelt fought desperately (and sometimes successfully) to shape American athletics in accordance with his imperialistic view of the world. It reveals that, in one way or another, we can trace our fanaticism for fitness and sports directly back to the twenty-sixth president and his relentless pursuit of “The Strenuous Life.”   “Essential reading for anyone who cares about the history of sports in America.” —Michael Kazin, author of War against War: The American Fight for Peace, 1914–1918

Sir Alastair Cook, who received a knighthood in the New Year Honours list the first England cricketer to do so since Sir Ian Botham in 2007 is the most prolific Test batsman the country has produced and one of the finest openers to grace the game. Cook turned 34 on Christmas Day 2018, having retired from international cricket in September. His career produced a phenomenal haul of 33 centuries and 12,472 runs in 161 Tests all three landmarks are England records. The tall left-hander, famed for his remarkable powers of concentration, signed off with a century in his final match against India at The Oval but will continue to play for his beloved Essex until the end of the 2021 season. He is the first cricketing knight to receive the accolade while still an active professional. Cook, who showed precocious talent as a schoolboy before signing for Essex, was rushed into the England team aged 21 to answer an injury crisis, and demonstrated his ability and temperament immediately with a debut century in Nagpur, India. He opened for England in 159 consecutive Tests, the longest continuous run of any player, and was the youngest player of any nationality to reach the landmarks of 6,000, 7,000, 8,000, 9,000, 10,000, 11,000 and 12,000 runs in Test cricket. He stands fifth on the list of all-time Test run scorers, hitting 3,000 more runs than his nearest England rival, Graham Gooch, his good friend and mentor who happened to be one of his first coaches at Essex. After Cook announced his retirement, Gooch described him as a genuine legend of English cricket.
