Summary

Izaak Walton's 'The Compleat Angler' is a seminal work that blends a detailed guide to fishing with philosophical musings on nature and the simple life. Written in 1653, this book combines practical advice on fishing techniques with poetic descriptions of the English countryside, making it a unique contribution to both literature and the angling world. Walton's charming and conversational style, combined with his deep love for nature, creates a work that is both informative and deeply reflective. Izaak Walton, a 17th-century biographer and writer, was a keen angler himself and wrote 'The Compleat Angler' as a tribute to his beloved pastime. His passion for fishing shines through in the book, as does his admiration for the beauty of the natural world. Walton's background as a biographer also adds depth to the work, as he weaves together personal anecdotes with practical advice, creating a rich tapestry of language and experience. For readers interested in the intersection of literature, nature, and the art of angling, 'The Compleat Angler' is a must-read. Walton's timeless reflections on the joys of fishing and the beauty of the English countryside continue to captivate readers to this day, making this book a classic in both angling literature and English literature as a whole.

A Texas naturalist shares an intimate record of the wooded ravine near his home in this almanac based on decades of journal entries.   In the mid-1960s, naturalist Fred Gehlbach and his family built a house on the edge of a wooded ravine in Central Texas. On daily walks over the hills, creek hollows, and fields of the ravine, Gehlbach has observed the cycles of weather and seasons, the annual migrations of birds, and the life cycles of animals and plants that also live there. In this book, Gehlbach draws on thirty-five years of journal entries to present a composite, day-by-day almanac of the life cycles of this semiwild natural island in the midst of urban Texas.   Recording such events as the hatching of Eastern screech owl chicks, the emergence of June bugs, and the first freeze of November, he reminds us of nature’s daily, monthly, and annual cycles, from which humans are becoming ever more detached in our unnatural urban environments. The long span of the almanac also allows Gehlbach to track how local and even global developments have affected the ravine, from scars left by sewer construction to an increase in frost-free days probably linked to global warming.   This long-term record of natural cycles provides one of only two such baseline data sets for North America. At the same time, it is an eloquent account of one keen observer’s daily interactions with his wild and human neighbors.

This look at the field of ichnology is “an excellent compendium and a timely piece on a rapidly expanding and changing area of research” (Quarterly Review of Biology).

The latest advances in dinosaur ichnology are showcased in this comprehensive and timely volume, in which leading researchers and research groups cover the most essential topics in the study of dinosaur tracks. Some assess and demonstrate state-of-the-art approaches and techniques, such as experimental ichnology, photogrammetry, biplanar X-rays, and a numerical scale for quantifying the quality of track preservation. The high diversity of these up-to-date studies underlines that dinosaur ichnological research is a vibrant field, that important discoveries are continuously made, and that new methods are being developed, applied, and refined.

This indispensable volume unequivocally demonstrates that ichnology has an important contribution to make toward a better understanding of dinosaur paleobiology. Tracks and trackways are one of the best sources of evidence to understand and reconstruct the daily life of dinosaurs. They are windows on past lives, dynamic structures produced by living, breathing, moving animals now long extinct, and they are every bit as exciting and captivating as the skeletons of their makers.
