Synopsis

Headlong Hall by Thomas Love Peacock Headlong Hall is a novella by Thomas Love Peacock, his first long work of fiction, written in 1815 and published in 1816.

As in his later novel Crotchet Castle, Peacock assembles a group of eccentrics, each with a single monomaniacal obsession, and derives humor and social satire from their various interactions and conversations. The setting is the country estate of Squire Harry Headlong Ap-Rhaiader, Esq., in Wales.

Four visitors arrive at Headlong Hall: "Mr. Foster, the perfectibilian; Mr. Escot, the deteriorationist; Mr. Jenkins, the statu-quoite; and the Reverend Doctor Gaster, who though of course neither a philosopher nor a man of taste, had so won the Squire's fancy by a learned dissertation on the art of stuffing a turkey, that he concluded no Christmas party would be complete without him.

" At the Hall, they find further guests, including phrenologist Mr. Cranium, philosopher Mr. Panscope, amateur musician Mr. Chromatic, and Miss Philomela Poppyseed, a popular novelist. Squire Headlong leads the throng through a series of dinners and Christmas celebrations, although the chief focus of the story is the running thread of conversation between the various exponents of their respective views. By the final morning of the party, four couples have become engaged, and Reverend Gaster performs a wedding ceremony for them. The guests disperse, promising to meet again in summer.

The true story of a jihadi convert seeking redemption in “a rollicking read and a rare insider’s account of Western spying in the age of al Qaeda” (The New York Times Book Review).   Standing over six feet tall with flaming red hair, Morten Storm was an unlikely jihadi. But after a troubled youth in his native Denmark, Storm found peace and purpose in his conversion to Islam. His absolute devotion only grew after he attended a militant madrasa in Yemen, named his son Osama, and became close friends with American-born terrorist cleric Anwar al-Awlaki. Then, after a decade of jihadi life, he not only rejected extremism—he began a quest for atonement, becoming a double agent for the CIA as well as British and Danish intelligence agencies.  Agent Storm takes readers inside the fanatical jihadist mindset and into the shadows of the world’s most powerful spy agencies in an action-packed account that “reads like a screenplay for a James Bond movie written by Joel and Ethan Coen” (The Washington Post).

This study of ancient Egyptian art reveals the evolution of aesthetic approaches to proportion and style through the ages.   The painted and relief-cut walls of ancient Egyptian tombs and temples record an amazing continuity of customs and beliefs over nearly 3,000 years. Even the artistic style of the scenes seems unchanging, but this appearance is deceptive. In this work, Gay Robins offers convincing evidence, based on a study of Egyptian usage of grid systems and proportions, that innovation and stylistic variation played a significant role in ancient Egyptian art.   Robins thoroughly explores the squared grid systems used by the ancient artists to proportion standing, sitting, and kneeling human figures. This investigation yields the first chronological account of proportional variations in male and female figures from the Early Dynastic to the Ptolemaic periods. Robins discusses the proportional changes underlying the revolutionary style instituted during the Amarna Period. She also considers how the grid system influenced the overall composition of scenes. Numerous line drawings with superimposed grids illustrate the text.

The Gospel of Thomas was discovered in 1945 at a place called Nag Hammadi, in Upper Egypt. It is one of the most controversial texts associated with the person known as Jesus (Yeshua). Through the canonical texts, Christians maintain that faith is all one needs to attain eternal life – the Gospel of Thomas teaches us that knowledge is the key. This gospel tells us that Yeshua gave one disciple His secret teachings, information the other disciples could not accept or understand. The Gospel of Thomas was so dangerous to the fledgling Christian community that it was categorised as Gnostic and heretical. In 77th Pearl: The Perpetual Tree we discover something astonishing.

In December 2017, the New York Times ran a story, Glowing Auras and ‘Black Money’: The Pentagon’s Mysterious UFO Program. The article shook the world. It confirmed that military personnel, in 2004, had reported several encounters with UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena). In June 2021, the Pentagon released a report, Preliminary Assessment: Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, which confirmed that there were indeed significant incidents of UAP incursions into military and commercial airspace.

These revelations confirmed what many ufologists had been reporting for the past seventy years. Moreover, scientists in the field have concluded that these encounters are not just physical. For many people they have a psychological impact, which changes the individual’s world view and perceptions of reality. Researchers are now suggesting that consciousness is the key to understanding this phenomena.

The conclusions of contemporary UAP researchers ratify the teachings we find in the Gospel of Thomas. This material dimension is just another layer of many, which human beings are starting to explore. Theories about quantum physics and the nature of the universe are bringing us closer to the wisdom already revealed to humanity by a Light being called Yeshua.

From a seasoned advisor, “a meaty, fast-paced portrait of North Korean society, economy, politics and foreign policy” (Foreign Affairs).   In The Impossible State, international-policy expert and former Director for Asian Affairs at the National Security Council Victor Cha pulls back the curtain on this controversial and isolated country, providing the best look yet at North Korea’s history, the rise of the Kim family dynasty, and the obsessive personality cult that empowers them. He illuminates the repressive regime's complex economy and culture, its appalling record of human-rights abuses, and its belligerent relationship with the United States, and analyzes the regime’s major security issues—from the seemingly endless war with its southern neighbor to its frightening nuclear ambitions—all in light of the destabilizing effects of Kim Jong-il's death and the pivotal and disquieting transition of power from tyrannical father to inexperienced son.   How this enigmatic nation-state—one that regularly violates its own citizens’ inalienable rights and has suffered famine, global economic sanctions, a collapsed economy, and near total isolation from the rest of the world—has continued to survive has long been a question that preoccupies the West. Cha reveals a land of contradictions, and delves into the ideology that leads an oppressed, starving populace to cling so fiercely to its failed leadership.   With rare personal anecdotes from the author’s time in Pyongyang and his tenure as an adviser in the White House, this authoritative, accessible, “engrossing” history (The Economist) offers much-needed understanding of the country’s veiled past and uncertain future.   “An up-close, insightful portrait.” —The Washington Post   “An eye-opening view of the closed, repressive dictatorship of North Korea. . . . A useful, pertinent work for understanding the human story behind the headlines.” —Kirkus Reviews
