Summary

Leviathan is both a magnificent literary achievement and the greatest work of political philosophy in the English language. Permanently challenging, it has found new applications and new refutations in every generation. Hobbes argues that human beings are first and foremost concerned with their own individual desires and fears. He shows that a conflict of each against every man can only be avoided by the adoption of a compact to enforce peace. The compact involves giving up some of our natural freedom to a sovereign power which will enforce the laws of peace on all citizens. Hobbes also analyses the subversive forces - religion, ambition, private conscience - that threaten to destroy the body politic, Leviathan itself, and return us to the state of war. This world view shocked many of Hobbes's contemporaries, and his work was publicly burnt for sedition and blasphemy when it was first published. But in his rejection of Aristotle's view of man as a naturally social being, and in his painstaking analysis of the ways in which society can and should function, Hobbes opened up a new world of political science.

Sometimes, looking at your past can give you the strength to move forward. As the classic symptoms of Parkinsons disease began to take control of Simon's life, he became a shadow of his former self. After months of fighting to keep the disease in check, Simon finally found the strength to tell his family and even managed to book an appointment with a neurologist. Sadly, at a time when he needed an experienced health care professional to help him fight his corner, what he got was a cold, uncaring man who clearly had no time for his situation. However, his initial assessment proved to be 100% accurate; at just 36 years of age, Simon was told he had Parkinsons disease. The desire to produce a written account of his life for his immediate family and friends led to A Life Worth Living. Ingram looks back at his life, often with humour and pathos, and decides that the way to keep going is to appreciate the life he has led. The only way to fight is to appreciate what battles he has already fought and won. After all, what else makes a life worth living? Ingram's first-hand account of his life from his early childhood to teen years to his first signs of the debilitating disease give an insider's look at not just a 'disease' but a man.

  • Drugs Addiction and Initiation: The Modern Search for Ritual - cover

    Drugs Addiction and Initiation:...

    Luigi Zoja

Luigi Zoja argues that the pervasive abuse of drugs in our society can in large part be ascribed to a resurgence of the collective need for initiation and initiatory structures: a longing for something sacred underlies our culture’s manic drive toward excessive consumption. In a society without ritual, the drug addict seeks not so much the thrill of a high as the satisfaction of an inner need for a "participation mystique" in the dominant religion of our times: consumerism.
A far-reaching yet incisive cultural analysis, "The Modern Search for Ritual" is a vigorous exposé, drawing its methodology from history, literature and anthropology, as well as Analytical Psychology. From its critique of drug cures based on detoxification to its discussion of the esoteric-terrorist cult of the Assassins, Zoja’s work is a classic in the field of psycho-anthropology.
