Summary

Enter the imaginative world of the four-year-old Sapphire twins. Jackson and Jillian love pretending and love doing everything all by themselves. Tonight’s task is tooth-brushing. But when Annie the guinea pig enters the scene, there is a brush with disaster. Older sister and brother, Alicia and Mason, will help the twins achieve a milestone of independence. "Jackson and Jillian" is written for read-aloud and for early readers. An art activity, and interactive questions to promote memory recall and emotional intelligence are included. ABOUT THE THREE BOOK SERIES: I was in my classroom when a student asked, “I wonder what my sister is doing right now?” The student’s question made me think about a child’s emerging concept of time: that of being aware of life happening elsewhere, outside of the child’s own experience. Each book in the Sapphire Family Series is told from a different point of view: that of the twins, in "Jackson and Jillian," their older sister, Alicia in "Alicia and Annie," and big brother, Mason in "Mason and Invincible Igor." All three books take place during the same period of time, early evening. Although the books can stand alone, read together they offer a three-dimensional exploration of sibling interactions and family dynamics. Reading a story from different points of view is a first step in thinking beyond oneself. My intention is that the Sapphire Family Series will offer children compelling characters with whom they can identify and grow, and present positive, realistic family dynamics that will delight them.

Imagine leaving your home and moving across the country to a new life on the unknown frontier. That’s exactly what thousands of people did in the mid-1800s when they traveled along the Oregon Trail, chasing their dreams of a better life out West. Jane Gardam, celebrated author of the Old Filth trilogy, brings her bright, incisive prose to an altogether different, more curious world in The Hollow Land, winner of the Whitbread Book Award. These stories capture the beauty of the barren Cumbrian countryside, and among its few inhabitants, the lives of two young boys, Bell Teesdale and Harry Bateman. Bell, from a farming family, has been raised in the dialect, hard work, and myth of the fells. His new friend Harry is a tourist whose family vacations there every year. The pair’s inseparable friendship provides a series of delightfuladventures rendered with Gardam’s gorgeous detail and sure use of humor. Bell and Harry look for every opportunity to discover ancient grounds and mysteries, like the history of the Egg Witch. Andeveryone is curious about the Household Name, the wildly famous Londoner who takes up residence at Light Trees Farm. Here as always, Gardam’s writing displays a marvelous spirit with confident ease. These are memorable stories, alive and sparkling, written as only Jane Gardam could write them. Her love for the “hollow land” and its people is evident in every line: readers of all ages will bepersuaded to share this heartfelt connection by the vividness of her writing.
