Summary

Ninth Building is a fascinating collection of vignettes drawn from Zou Jingzhi's experience growing up during the Cultural Revolution, first as a boy in Beijing and then as a teenager exiled to the countryside. Zou poetically captures a side of the Cultural Revolution that is less talked about—the sheer tedium and waste of young life, as well as the gallows humor that accompanies such desperate situations. Jeremy Tiang's enthralling translation of this important work of fiction was awarded a PEN/Heim Grant.

The actress, model and former wife of Mickey Rourke tells of her rise from homeless teen to supermodel and her recovery from anorexia and abuse.

Teen runaway, supermodel, and actress Carré Otis found herself in the public eye from a very tender age. By the time she was twenty, millions of people had already gazed at provocative images of her in magazine and billboard ads from Guess and Calvin Klein, on the pages of Playboy and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, and on posters for the controversial film Wild Orchid, with her soon-to-be husband Mickey Rourke. Their troubled marriage was widely reported in the media, as were Carré’s struggles with drugs and a particularly brutal eating disorder. But simply because we’ve seen someone naked on the page or exposed on the screen or in the tabloids doesn’t mean we know who that person really is.

In Beauty, Disrupted, Carré Otis confronts her complex past fearlessly and with unrelenting candor. The result is a narrative of success, despair, and ultimate triumph over sexual exploitation and our cultural obsession with appearance—a narrative of beauty disrupted, reclaimed, and made more radiant through self-acceptance, inner peace, and the love of family.

Jane was a wartime phenomenon. A sensation. She was also an important feature in the morale of Britain's fighting forces around the world and to those left behind on the "Home Front". So important, in fact, that her fame extended to the House of Commons where one wartime MP referred to our troops as "Jane's fighting men!" Until now there has been no published study of Jane or the woman who inspired her. This book fills the gap with a publication which will have a wide appeal. In a production combining words, photographs and selective cartoons, an in-depth look is taken at the Jane story and, in particular, the beautiful real life model behind that story, Christabel Leighton-Porter. A wealth of pictorial and photographic material exists to illustrate this highly visual story. Much of it has never before seen the light of day. All of it is of high quality and a considerable quantity falls into the 'glamor' category which will appeal to both male and female readers in what is an interesting study of wartime Britain and of Jane's historical and sociological importance of those times.

“A spellbinding portrait” of the tumultuous life and artistic career of one of the most creative photographers of the 1960s (New York magazine).  Diane Arbus became famous for her intimate and unconventional portraits of twins, dwarfs, sideshow performers, eccentrics, and everyday “freaks.” Condemned by some for voyeurism, praised by others for compassion, she was nonetheless a transformative figure in twentieth-century photography and hailed by all for her undeniable genius. Her life was cut short when she committed suicide in 1971 at the peak of her career. In the first complete biography of Arbus, author Patricia Bosworth traces the arc of Arbus’s remarkable life: her sheltered upper-class childhood and passionate, all-consuming marriage to Allan Arbus; her roles as wife and devoted mother; and her evolution from fashion photographer to critically acclaimed artist—one who forever altered the boundaries of photography.

The advent of the Prophet Muhammad SAW changed the face of the history of mankind in a manner that this world has never seen before. Since the first man and Prophet Adam AS was sent down to Earth, Allah SWT (God) sent many prophets and messengers to guide mankind to the Truth and to the Straight Path.

Soon after the deaths of these prophets, their followers deviated from the teachings and corrupted the religion of Allah. He rejuvenated the Truth as taught by the previous prophets and messengers, and re-established the Law of Allah on Earth through the teachings of the Qur'an and the practice of the Sunnah.

At the time of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, two great prophetic religions were practiced in the environs of Arabia - namely Judaism and Christianity. Both of these religions were born from the basic teachings of Islam as taught by Prophet Musa AS and Prophet Isa AS. However, the original teachings were lost, and these religions were born.
